Thailand Continues Attacks on Cambodia Hours After Ceasefire Talks Agreed
Just hours after US President Donald Trump announced a breakthrough in ceasefire talks, Cambodia reports new, multiple attacks by Thai forces on its territory.
On Saturday, July 26th, US President Donald Trump stated that both Cambodian and Thai leaders had agreed to meet immediately to work out a ceasefire. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet quickly confirmed Cambodia's unconditional acceptance of this proposal. Thailand's acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, also thanked Trump, agreeing in principle to a ceasefire but stipulating a need for sincere intention from Cambodia.
However, on the morning of July 27th, Cambodia's Ministry of Defense reported that Thai forces continued their aggression.
According to the Ministry's timeline for July 27th:
2:00 a.m.: Thai shells struck the Veal Intry area.
2:30 a.m.: Thai forces shelled the Ta Thav and Phnom Kmoch regions, with drones consistently hovering overhead.
4:50 a.m.: Heavy artillery fire was directed onto Ta Moan Thom and Ta Krabei temple.
6:00 a.m.: Thai forces continued with more ground attacks onto the Phnom Kmoch region.
These reports of continued attacks directly follow the announced agreement for ceasefire talks, and come as Thailand's King Vajiralongkorn has already declared martial law in eight border districts due to the deadly clashes.
The Cambodian Ministry of Defense also reiterates that Thailand's invasion continues to claim civilian lives and force Cambodian civilians living along the border to repeatedly move for safety, underscoring the severe humanitarian impact.
