"nowhere to go but everywhere" -jack kerouac

Mission: CreativeChaos vmg is a feature film, documentary and television production company based in New York and Los Angeles. Founded in 2010 by Tom Donahue, Ilan Arboleda, and Steve Edwards, CreativeChaos focuses on projects that are provocative and that move the dial on the cultural conversation. We are guided by a deeply held philosophy stating that all projects must meet the following three qualifications: artistic merit, commercial viability, and social disruption. The ability for art and media to be a socially disruptive force is the cornerstone of our work.

EDITORIAL: Some vets don't want our thanks - The Columbia Paper

An editorial on our new documentary, Thank You For Your Service in the The Columbia Paper:

"Why see a film on such a potentially gloomy topic? Because the director, Tom Donahue, is a skilled storyteller on a mission to help and his subjects have reason to be hopeful. He has focused his movie on this handful of veterans, one of whom, for instance, goes looking for the family of civilians he may have killed–and he finds them." #BHCNOW #TYFYSFilm Tom Donahue Ilan Arboleda Matt Tyson Steve Edwards Patti Casby William Rodriguez Carrie Ann Alford Michelle Dutro

We commemorate Memorial Day with all the men and women, past and present, who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Here is a trailer from one of early Official Selections of OIFF-2016! Every year, the festival selects early a handfull of films to be shown on the big screen ahead of the submissions deadline. Thank You For Your Service (in Full Length Documentaries category) tackles the mental health crisis in the military and addresses specific solutions to reducing stigma both within the military and as a larger cultural and societal context. We also tell the story of incredibly resilient veterans whose struggles and triumphs are chronicled in the film. This is a must-watch documentary about PTSD with interviews from the leaders of our military and our government, as well as mental health professionals, non-profit leaders and veterans and their families. For schedule of Oceanside International Film Festival 2016 (still accepting films through June 13), go to: www.osidefilm.org See you on the red carpet!

S.O.S. - Save Our Studio!

Friends of Eastern Effects,

We are writing to ask for your help. After years of hard work and significant financial investment, we find ourselves in danger of losing our main stage at 270 Nevins Street through eminent domain. The City of New York is proposing to take our site for use as a temporary construction staging location as they build two combined sewage overflow (CSO) tanks next door to clean up the Gowanus Canal. The loss of the soundstage at 270 Nevins Street would be devastating to our business. You can read more about our situation here: http://easterneffects.com/home/sos/

With your support, we can convince our government officials to use one of the surrounding, vacant and more fitting properties for the temporary construction staging. Using one of these alternative sites would not close small businesses or eliminate jobs, and would allow us to continue to thrive in Gowanus.

Please click here: http://easterneffects.com/home/sos-update/ to sign a letter in support of Eastern Effects and our employees. The time to make a difference is now: the official comment period on the proposed staging location and tank siting ends Tuesday, May 31st.

Your support has been crucial over the years as we’ve built Eastern Effects into a state-of-the-art production studio. We hope you will take a moment to voice your support to our representatives.

Please forward this message or link onto other friends of Eastern Effects.

Again, thank you for all you’ve done to support us and please reach out if you have any questions.

With many thanks,
Scott, Laura, and Chris – Owners of Eastern Effects, Inc.

DOC NYC Offers Hundreds of Films. Here Are Some of the Best.

Great Review in the Village Voice for our latest film Thank You For Your Service premiering this Friday at DOC NYC.

"Tom Donahue's Thank You for Your Service also stares into the lives of the hurting. The film investigates the epidemic of psychic trauma among veterans of our desert wars; unlike in most docs that fall into unabashed advocacy, Donahue's footage — wrenching testimonials from soldiers, spouses, and the highest of government and military muckety-mucks — tells gripping stories rather than just serving the argument. The argument, though, is persuasive: It's deeply immoral to train citizens for war but then not train them again, afterwards, for living."
#BHCNOW #DOCNYC #CCVMG #thankyouforyourservice #veterans #mentalhealthcrisis

A sad truth of our age of Kickstarter is that the term documentary is still regularly applied to nonfiction films that don't actually document anything more substantial than an argument or a political viewpoint. The talking heads talk, and what audiences actually look at — what the film actually is.…

What the Gospel of Innovation Gets Wrong

"The idea of progress—the notion that human history is the history of human betterment—dominated the world view of the West between the Enlightenment and the First World War. It had critics from the start, and, in the last century, even people who cherish the idea of progress, and point to improvements like the eradication of contagious diseases and the education of girls, have been hard-pressed to hold on to it while reckoning with two World Wars, the Holocaust and Hiroshima, genocide and global warming. Replacing “progress” with “innovation” skirts the question of whether a novelty is an improvement: the world may not be getting better and better but our devices are getting newer and newer."

Clayton M. Christensen’s popular theory of disruption is founded on panic, anxiety, and shaky evidence.

nd then I got an audition for Hairspray—the original Hairspray movie—and the casting director for that movie was named Marion Dougherty. They made a documentary about her recently: Casting By. She started my whole career. She’s responsible for my whole film career, because I went in for Hairspray, and I met John Waters and auditioned and everything, but they said, “You know what? You’re great, but you’re not right for this.” Well, actually, what they said was, “You’re not good-looking enough.” [Laughs.] But she said, “But you should be in Ironweed, because you look the part.” And I said, “Well, they wouldn’t let me audition.” And Marion Dougherty said, “Well, let me get on the phone.”

““In the early days of Hollywood, casting directors had little decision-making power. Most working actors were signed to individual studios, and casting mainly involved matching individuals to roles based on the actor’s availability and type. In the nineteen-sixties, as the studio system broke down, the influence of casting directors grew. Heavyweights like Marion Dougherty discovered young talent on Broadway and persuaded directors to hire such unknowns as Al Pacino, Paul Newman, and Robert Duvall.””

Bob Dylan performs with Robert Davi

“Dylan’s short noir co-stars Robert Davi, a journeyman actor whose grizzled looks paved the way for his casting in dozens of gangster roles. However, Davi’s presence likely has a deeper meaning: Not only did Davi make his acting debut alongside Sinatra in the crime flick Contract on Cherry Street, Davi moonlights as one of Las Vegas’ premier Sinatra tribute acts. In 2011, Davi released his own album of Sinatra covers, Davi Sings Sinatra – On The Road To Romance.
