“I’m so proud of you.”

Those were Leya’s words to Ethan after he prepared her bottle of chocolate milk, or “leche con cocoa,” as she calls it. Then she gave him the sweetest hug.

And watching them, I realized something…

Erick and I aren’t becoming Leya’s best friends.

Ethan is.

Her big brother is becoming the person she looks up to, celebrates, hugs, plays with, and will probably share a million little secrets and adventures with as they grow up together.

There’s something so beautiful about watching that friendship take shape right in front of us.

As their dads, we’ll always be here to love them, guide them, protect them and cheer them on.

But knowing that, in this life, they also have each other?

I wouldn’t want it any other way. ❤️

Raising our kids bilingual...

For us, it’s never been just about speaking Spanish. It’s about making our Dominican and Latino culture part of our everyday life.

We read to them in Spanish. We cook the food we grew up with. We dance to the music we love. And we make learning fun through educational shows like Aprende Peque. AprendePeque

Leya absolutely loves Isa, and because of that, Ethan has become a fan too. They were so excited to finally meet her in person this summer… although I think I was even more excited than they were. 😂

Meeting Isa was definitely a highlight, but the ending of this experience? Let’s just say it wasn’t as fun and exciting. 😅

“Soy poderosa. Soy inteligente. Soy respetada. Soy capaz.” Some of the words Leya and I say every morning, after dropping Ethan off at school (summer program in this case). Her 7 year old brother has his affirmations too.

At just two years old, she may not fully understand the meaning of every word yet, but she is learning that her voice matters, that she has value, and that confidence starts from within.

As parents, we can’t control everything our children will hear from the world. But we can help shape the voice they hear first.

What we repeat becomes what we believe. ❤️

Our journey to parenthood took us through foster care, surrogacy, courtrooms, heartbreak, healing, and countless lessons about love, resilience, and what it truly means to show up for one another.

Thank you to Sugey Palomares for beautifully capturing our story in this magazine feature and the experiences that ultimately gave us a deeper understanding of what family truly means.

If there’s one thing this journey has taught us, it’s that family isn’t defined by how it begins, but by the love, commitment, and village that help it grow.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to share our story and hope it offers encouragement to others navigating their own path to parenthood.

And just like that, first grade has come to an end.

Watching your first day and your last day side by side is a reminder of just how much you’ve grown this year. You’re taller, wiser, more confident, and more independent than ever before.

But through all that growth, you’ve remained the same caring, kind-hearted, and beautiful young boy you’ve always been.

Ethan, we are so proud of you, not just for what you’ve learned in the classroom, but for the incredible person you’re becoming.

Congratulations on finishing first grade. We can’t wait to see what second grade has in store for you.

We love you so much.
