I guess this is officially my goodbye to the Toyota community šŸ˜­ Insurance decided to total my 2004 Camry with 271,000 miles after this rear-corner damage. The tail light is obviously busted and the bumper took a hit, but the car was still running and driving, so hearing the word ā€œtotaledā€ honestly hurt more than seeing the damage. They told me the repair numbers just didnā€™t make sense compared with what the car is worth at this mileage. I understand the math, but after 271k miles this thing felt like it had earned the right to keep going until the engine itself gave up. Instead, one accident ended it. I already bought the replacement, but I crossed enemy lines and went with a Subaru Forester this time. Itā€™s been fun, Toyotians. Be honest: would you have tried to keep this Camry alive, or is 271,000 miles the point where you take the insurance money and move on?

Weā€™re completely split over this $7,850 repair estimate. One side says the damage is obviously more than scratches: the fender is folded in, the bumper corner is chewed up, the hood gap looks off, and the lower trim is broken, so fixing it properly means replacing parts and blending the paint until you canā€™t tell anything happened. The other side says spending nearly eight grand on one front corner is ridiculous when the car still runs and most of the damage appears cosmetic from the outside. Iā€™m somewhere in the middle because I definitely donā€™t want a cheap repair that leaves weird panel gaps or mismatched gray paint, but I also donā€™t want to pay luxury-car money just because every little bracket suddenly has its own part number šŸ˜… Would you repair everything back to factory-looking condition, or fix what matters mechanically and live with a few battle scars?

I AM SICK over this. One hit to the front corner and now the fender is crushed, the bumper is scraped up, the headlight area is pushed around, and pieces of the lower trim are literally sitting on the ground. I took it in expecting an ugly bill, but the body shop came back with $8,460 because apparently once you start talking about a fender, bumper cover, brackets, paint, sensors, trim, and getting all the panel gaps lined back up, the number just explodes šŸ˜­ The car still runs and the wheel looks untouched, so hearing almost nine grand for damage concentrated in ONE corner honestly made me feel like I was being scammed. I know modern cars arenā€™t cheap to repair, but this seems wild. Does $8,460 actually sound believable for damage like this, or would you be getting another estimate immediately?

I am officially taking away my teenager's driving privileges for the rest of the year. He took my crossover out in the rain last night and supposedly slid on a wet patch of road right into our neighbor's brick mailbox. The entire driver side headlight is smashed inward and the bumper is permanently creased. Since this is a lease that I have to turn back in next spring, the Odessa dealership told me I am required to use genuine factory OEM parts, quoting me exactly $2,185 for the repair. My brother-in-law swears we can just order a knockoff replacement light assembly online for a few hundred bucks and snap it into the cracked bumper ourselves before the final inspection. Will the dealership actually penalize me for using aftermarket plastic on a lease return, or do I need to swallow my pride and pay the massive dealer premium to get this fixed correctly?

Iā€™m convinced the shop is overthinking this $5,920 repair because the car has already done most of the bodywork itself. The fender is folded inward, which means itā€™s technically more aerodynamic now. The hood gap is larger on one side, so thatā€™s extra engine-bay ventilation. The damaged light area has less plastic blocking airflow, and the scraped paint means I no longer have to worry about getting the first scratch. Thatā€™s FOUR upgrades from one incident, yet somehow the shop wants almost six grand to put everything back the boring factory way šŸ˜­ I suggested finding a black marker for the white scuffs, pushing the fender out enough that the tire clears, and calling the rest ā€œcustom widebody development.ā€ Apparently that isnā€™t considered a professional repair. Seems suspiciously convenient from the people charging $5,920. Am I really supposed to believe every bent piece of metal has to be restored when half of this looks like free performance engineering?

The shop came back with $6,480 šŸ˜­ The headlight still looks intact, the car still drives, and most of the visible damage is concentrated around this one front corner, so I honestly wasnā€™t prepared for a number anywhere near that. Theyā€™re telling me the cracked bumper, damaged fog-light area, bent fender, brackets, paint matching, and all the labor add up fast once they start taking things apart. I understand body work isnā€™t cheap, but $6,480 feels like Iā€™m repairing half the car instead of one corner. Iā€™m seriously wondering if they saw insurance involved and just started adding zeros. Does this actually look like a six-thousand-dollar repair to you, or would you be getting another estimate immediately?

One side says the front corner should be repaired properly because the headlight, bumper, panel gaps, and paint all need to line up again or the car will always look obviously hit. The other side says spending more than four grand on cosmetic-looking damage is insane when the vehicle still runs and most of the mess is concentrated around one light and the bumper. I can honestly understand both sides. My family is split over what I should WANT insurance to do with this Corolla. Iā€™m firmly in the total it and let me move on camp because somebody hit it at 2:00am and the rear corner took a brutal hit. The wheel is pushed out of position, the quarter panel is mangled, and the bumper area is torn apart. Another person keeps telling me not to write the car off until the body shop looks underneath because insurance totals cars based on repair cost versus value, not just how dramatic the damage looks. I understand that, but even if they say it CAN be repaired, Iā€™m not sure I want a car back after this much work has been done to one corner. Insurance still required it to be towed in for an assessment, so now Iā€™m waiting. If they gave you the choice between repairing this Corolla or taking a total-loss payout, which direction would you personally be hoping the numbers go?

I barely clipped a curb and now Iā€™m worried the dealership is going to tell me I need $1,860 worth of repairs. The car still drives normally, the tire hasnā€™t lost pressure, and thereā€™s no obvious vibration or pulling, but the sidewall definitely took a scrape and the rim has a decent amount of curb rash. Online forums have me convinced Iā€™ve somehow destroyed the tire, bent the wheel, and knocked the alignment out all from one low-speed hit šŸ˜… Iā€™m having the service department look at it tomorrow because Iā€™d rather know for sure, but I also know how quickly ā€œwe recommend replacing thisā€ can snowball when youā€™re standing at a dealership counter. Iā€™m not trying to ignore actual damage, I just want to know whatā€™s reasonable before I walk in. Would you expect them to replace the tire, repair the wheel, check the alignment, or is most of this likely just ugly cosmetic damage?
