Yob - The Unreal Never Lived. August 23, 2005.
The Unreal Never Lived is the apex of Yob’s first act. Towering and perpetually reaching for something ineffable. Each riff propelling itself towards transcendence.
These songs have, for two decades, been ever present cornerstones of the bands live performance. As timeless as they are permanent.
Listen today, listen often. Twenty goddamn years of this monolith.

Foundations of Burden was released on this day in 2014.
Over the past year Pallbearer have completely reconstructed the album from the original sessions, with remixed and remastered treatments of its six pieces that fully realize their original vision for this transformative part of their history.
This refreshed release features entirely new artwork from artist Ben Vierling, imbuing the album with his own visionary interpretation of the record’s iconography.
More information and pre-orders for Foundations of Burden (2025 Redux) launch this Friday at 9am EST.

Bing & Ruth - Species. July 17, 2020.
The past decade has seen a resurgence of compositions for pipe organ. Conversely, Bing & Ruth’s Species may be the only album specifically composed for compact organ since the initial heyday of capital M Minimalism when Steve Reich and Philip Glass would drag their organs across downtown loft floors.
The instruments inherently limited dynamic range led David to compositionally swap undulations in volume for an elastic treatment of meter. Expanding and contracting tempos to create movement and subtly bend perception of time.
So… how do you celebrate an anniversary for a record that pays no heed to chronology? Maybe you shouldn’t. Perhaps Species exists in an eternal present. A pause from the onslaught of horrors that the past 5 years have thrown at us (though ironically David once described the record to me as inherently angry). Regardless it stands, somewhat unique, in its balance of compositional rigor and feeling of openness and is worth hearing for the first or hundredth time today.

It is a true honor to see Yob recognized by the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
For 25 years Yob’s music has rippled outward, touching people and shifting them at their core in subtle ways that make this world a better place. They have always been more than just a rock band. Infused with deep mindfulness before that was a multi billion dollar industrial complex of its own. There is care and thought in every decision they make. Sometimes that manifests as slow movement in a hyper charged world. Always it’s reflective of care and consideration.
Their unique approach to doom metal is rooted in the big riff, the bulldozer that somehow shifts through subtle iterations of rhythm and syncopation, while never not pummeling. That movement is made possible by the grounding nature of the rhythm section, which itself has changed over the years. Solidified now around Aaron and Dave. Forever intuitive in the balance of propulsion and pause. An internal tension that presents to the audience as just destabilizing enough to free the moment from competing inputs and open up a shared experience. This is particularly true of the live arena, where the effect is communal, bordering on the spiritual.
These are acts of service.
Yob is Love.

Repetition as an investigation of endless variations. That’s a common thread across the music we represent and listen to. The subtlest pause can open up entire worlds of emotion. This track by David Moore uses minor variations to reflect on ever shifting memories of home. Eroding a sense of permanence. Lose yourself in “Bleeding, KS”.

Today, David Moore presents himself threefold for Northern Spy’s Across the Horizon series. Three pieces, three projects, three compositional approaches.
First in his natural state, alone at a piano, reflecting on the idea of home. A singular concept, open to redefinition, much like the sole melody and its subtle shift in presentation throughout the piece, it is a construct refracted and reframed, as slippery as memory.
Secondly, in duet with expert fiddle player Stephanie Coleman. David destabilizes the tonal center of Stephanie’s neo traditional fiddle lament with pump organ drones that are as close to tambura as to bagpipes as to early modular synthesis experimentation.
Finally, in trio formation as Cowboy Sadness, an egoless collaboration with Peter Silberman of The Antlers and Nicholas Principe of Port St Willow. This track leaves behind the Midwest planes for… Lounge Ax? Channeling the more wide eyed exponents of Chicago’s 90 post rock boom. Breezy, open & entirely unburdened.
