Scientists are planning to create a "Lunar Ark" on the Moon:
For the plan, they will store the DNA of 6.7 million species on the moon. The Llunar Ark will be placed within the moon's lava tubes to safeguard the DNA of all of Earth's known species.
Consider it a global insurance policy, says project mastermind Jekan Thanga, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of Arizona’s Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering.
This ambitious project aims to create an off-world genetic repository, containing the cryogenically preserved s***m, eggs, and seeds of various plants, animals, and fungi. Such an endeavor, envisioned to protect biodiversity from catastrophic events like supervolcanic eruptions or nuclear wars, would necessitate over 250 rocket launches to transport the genetic material to the moon. The ark, powered by solar panels, would leverage the natural protection offered by the moon's lava tubes—ancient, hollowed-out tunnels formed over 3 billion years ago. The scientists behind the project believe that, although the necessary technology is not yet fully developed, the lunar ark could realistically be constructed within the next 30 years, serving as a crucial backup for Earth's invaluable genetic diversity. Similar to how data is backed up to secure it against loss, storing DNA on the moon acts as a planetary backup system. It ensures that, in the event of a catastrophe on Earth, we have the necessary genetic information to potentially restore species or ecosystems. Plants and animals that are vital for food security, medicine, and economic stability will be prioritized to ensure humanity's survival and well-being.
