Amie Fornah Sankoh, originally from Sierra Leone, made history as the first deaf Black woman to earn a doctorate in STEM in the U.S. After losing her hearing at age 3 and moving to Tennessee for better opportunities, she found confidence through math and science. Despite communication barriers and setbacks during the pandemic, she earned her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Tennessee, with her proud parents flying in from Sierra Leone to celebrate.
