WHEN THE THEATRE GOES DARK

BroadwayBlack.com is dedicated to spotlighting the achievements of Black theatre artists on and off the Broadway stage. For too long, our voices have been overlooked—inside and outside of The Great White Way. But our stories are essential, our presence undeniable. This platf

orm is a living archive, a cultural hub, and a celebration of all things Black theatre. Created for the child in all of us who looked up at the stage searching for faces that looked like ours. Built for the artists who give their whole selves to the work. We shine light on those continuing the journey and pay tribute to those who paved the way—so that our stories can be told, seen, and heard on every stage.

FIRST LOOK at another reason to go back to Skid Row 🌱👀

Nikki M. James is giving heart, vulnerability, and vocals as Audrey, Jordan Fisher steps into Seymour with that boy-next-door charm, and Andy Karl? Oh he’s cutting UP as Orin 😮‍💨

And don’t sleep on that trio! Christine Wanda, Savannah Lee Birdsong, and Morgan Ashley Bryant as the Urchins with Christian McQueen as the voice of Audrey II 👀

This Little Shop of Horrors revival is still THAT girl in year seven at the Westside Theatre and clearly not slowing down.

“Talent is insignificant. I know a lot of talented ruins. Beyond talent lie all the usual words: discipline, love, luck, but, most of all, endurance.”
― James Baldwin

And then came the moment. ✨

At the close of the performance, Misty Copeland took the stage reminding us why her presence alone can shift the energy of a room.

After hip surgery and a season of recovery, seeing her command the stage at the Academy Awards felt even more powerful. This is a testimony.

The performance we were all waiting for. 🎭🔥

A live performance of “I Lied To You” from Sinners at the Oscars was always going to hit different and it did. It had the scale, the musicianship, and the storytelling that made it feel like theatre on the biggest stage.

Miles Caton and Raphael Saadiq led the moment, joined by Misty Copeland, Eric Gales, Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, Bobby Rush, Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Shaboozey, and Alice Smith during the Academy Awards.

Blues, movement, and storytelling, the kind of live moment that reminds you how close film and theatre really are.

Experience a staged concert of Blue, the award-winning contemporary opera from Lincoln Center’s 2025 Visionary Artist and two-time Tony Award winner Jeanine Tesori. Set in Harlem, Blueis a poignant and powerful contemporary opera that delves into the heart of a Black middle-class family—grappling with the devastating loss of their teenage son, who is fatally shot by a white police officer during a peaceful protest. This two-act opera, with music by Jeanine Tesori, a libretto by acclaimed playwright and director Tazewell Thompson, and direction also by Thompson, offers an unflinching exploration of race and identity within the Black community.

Last night, the music played again.

The revival of Ragtime opened on Broadway—a story of love, legacy, and revolution reborn through new voices.

From the red carpet to the curtain call, history met the present.

Joshua Henry, Nichelle Lewis, and a cast carrying the weight and wonder of what it means to dream in America — again.

Every post has its own pulse.
This one just took a few days to breathe.

From family and faith, to reflection and remembrance, these last few days reminded me that creation isn’t constant motion. It’s listening. It’s honoring. It’s knowing when to pause.

D’Angelo reminded us what patience in art looks like. Oh Happy Day reminds us what redemption in community feels like. Both speak the same language of time, trust, and transformation.

The work doesn’t stop when we rest.
It deepens.

Rest is part of the rhythm.
