GUYANESE LIFESTYLE - TUSLI DAS RAMCHARITMANAS "HANUMAN POOJA" IN NEW YORK CITY- Video/Text by Nala Singham
In the Indo-Gangetic plains of medieval India, Tulisi Das wrote the Hindi version of the Ramayana in the 15th Century, translating the original version written in Sanskrit by Valmiki in 600 BC (Before Christ).
Unlike the classical Ramayana by Valmiki, which is considered more literary, Tulsidas's work is heavily devotional, making it suitable for recitation and singing. This approach makes the story of Ram accessible to a wider audience, contributing to its widespread popularity, and presents philosophical and moral teachings within the story.
With the advent of the British in the Sub-continent, the creation of British India led to the massive transport of labor from this part of the world to the British Colonies in the West Indies, including Guyana and Suriname in South America.
The descendants, 5th and 6th generation of the ancestors who arrived in Guyana more than 186 years ago from British India, have kept this tradition of Ramcharitimas alive with great passion.
With the advent of Indo-Guyanese migration to North America, you can savor the intense, heart-wrenching devotional renderings of the "Hanuman Pooja" (prayer recital) right here in New York City, with an umbilical cord still connected to ancient India, dating back 2500 years.
