Shrimp-like creatures living in the deepest parts of the oceans contain high levels of man-made toxins, scientists said on Monday. Tiny crustaceans, such as yellowish Hirondellea gigas living in darkness about 10,000 meters (33,000 ft) down in the Pacific Ocean, are polluted by PCBs, used in electric transformers or paints, and PBDE chemicals used as flame retardants. Scientists were most shocked by the high levels of poisons in what had seemed a wilderness, he told Reuters.

Two large, "L"-shaped instruments separated by 1,865 miles are eavesdropping on the most extreme events in the universe. The two Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) sites, located in Louisiana and Washington, have been tasked with picking up the faint signs sent out into the universe by black holes colliding in deep space. These collisions are so extreme that they literally warp the fabric of space and time around them, like a rock being dropped into a stream. However, the ripples — known as gravitational waves — are extremely difficult to detect. Read more

We're used to lightning that shoots down from clouds, but a lesser-known form of electricity blasts up from cloud tops — and out toward space. Called blue jets, these gigantic electrical discharges are rarely photographed. Typically, only pilots who fly over active thunderstorms see or photograph them. Satellites have recorded them, too, but not very well. However, an astronaut in space has filmed a first-of-its-kind color video of elusive blue jets, according to a January 2017 study in Geophysical Research Letters. Read more

The Lufengosaurus — a long-necked herbivore that walked on two feet in what is now southwestern China — has been dead for 195 million years. But scientists think a small bit of soft tissue still clings to those old bones. Writing in the journal Nature this week, paleontologists reported the discovery of a tiny amount of preserved collagen — the fibrous protein that makes up cartilage and connective tissue — in the rib of this long-dead Jurassic dinosaur. A pair of researchers in the U.K. has identified fossils found in the Transylvania area in Romania as those of a pterosaur they have named Hatzegopteryx—a giant, muscle-bound flying reptile that could eat prey as large as a small horse. In their paper published in the journal Peer, Mark Witton with Portsmouth University and Darren Naish, with the University of Southampton describe the fossils and what they believe the creature looked like when it was alive. Researchers have identified traces of what they believe is the earliest known prehistoric ancestor of humans—a microscopic, bag-like sea creature, which lived about 540 million years ago. Named Saccorhytus, after the sack-like features created by its elliptical body and large mouth, the species is new to science and was identified from microfossils found in China. It is thought to be the most primitive example of a so-called "deuterostome"—a broad biological category that encompasses a number of sub-groups, including the vertebrates. [ 48 more words ]

Theoretical physicists and astrophysicists, investigating irregularities in the cosmic microwave background (the 'afterglow' of the Big Bang), have found there is substantial evidence supporting a holographic explanation of the universe—in fact, as much as there is for the traditional explanation of these irregularities using the theory of cosmic inflation. Local legend speculates that Mt. Baigong in the Qinghai Province of China is an ancient extraterrestrial laboratory. Aside from the mysterious pyramid that crowns the mountain, three triangular entrances at the mountain’s base lead the way to hundreds of decrepit metal pipe-like structures of unknown origin. The most recent researchers to examine the pipes believe that the metallic phenomena are in fact fossilized tree root casts, the rusted tubes being the result of tree roots that underwent the processes of pedogenesis (the process that forms soils) and diagenesis (transformation of soil into rock). They may have lived peaceful lives, but it appears that monks living in Sudan 1,000 years ago did not have such a dignified ending. Researchers have excavated four ancient cemeteries in Sudan and revealed that many of the skeletons had signs of 'defleshing'. Marks on the skeletons' bones suggest that their flesh was removed shortly after death – although the reason for this remains a mystery.

A new study has backed the theory complex life, including animal like creatures, may have evolved once before in Earth's history. A new study found 2.3 billion years ago, a primitive Earth briefly had an oxygen rich atmosphere. This so-called Lomagundi Event could have provided a fleeting opportunity for complex, animal-like creatures to evolve billions of years before our ancestors first roamed the planet. Read more
