A legendary World Championship final from Doha 2023.

In the men’s under 81 kg final, Tato Grigalashvili faced Matthias Casse for the third consecutive time at a World Championship final.

After controlling the rhythm of the contest, Grigalashvili found the perfect moment and delivered a deep ippon-seoi-nage.

The throw was awarded waza-ari, giving the Georgian the decisive lead.

Grigalashvili won the final 1–0 and successfully defended his World Championship title.

Strong upper-body control, close distance and repeated attacks make the difference here. Even when the first attempt is defended, he stays connected, adjusts his position and continues attacking.

Technical Analysis: Megu Danno vs Laura Fazliu | Budapest Grand Slam

Megu Danno shows excellent timing and control in this exchange.

She first secures the upper body and disrupts her opponent’s posture. As the opponent’s weight begins to shift, Danno immediately attacks from the inside and continues driving through the movement.

The key detail is the combination of kuzushi, close upper-body control, and continuous pressure. She does not attack the leg separately — the leg action works together with the rotation and pull of the upper body.

Once the opponent’s balance is broken, there is almost no opportunity to recover.

A very good example of how timing and control can make a compact judo attack extremely effective.

No Showdown in Baku?

Unfortunately, we will not see Teddy Riner and Inal Tasoev face each other at the 2026 World Judo Championships in Baku.

Teddy Riner has withdrawn from the tournament because of a right shoulder injury, while Inal Tasoev is preparing to fight for another world title.

This was one of the most anticipated heavyweight matchups in judo. We would have loved to see them meet again on the tatami.
