How many mama's felt this moment in yo' soul?! 🙋‍♀️ • When Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson stepped in front of Congress this week to start her nomination hearings, it was a historic moment in the U.S.: Judge Jackson is the first Black woman to be nominated to the Supreme Court.

, a photographer for The New York Times, captured this moment of Judge Jackson’s daughter Leila, 17, smiling at her mom on the first day of the hearings. Judge Jackson’s daughters and husband sat behind her as questioning by Republicans grew increasingly hostile throughout the week. The Republicans stepped up their criticism of what they portrayed as a pattern of leniency in her sentencing of child s*x abusers and tried to paint her as a liberal on issues of race, gender, guns and abortion rights.

We asked Maney to reflect on the moment she captured during the hearing.

“When I saw the look that Leila gave to her mother I was like, wow. I felt what she was feeling as a young Black woman because I know what it takes to create a seat for myself in a space that isn’t historically created for me to be in. I saw the expression that she gave her mother, and I waited until I saw it again, because I knew that I wanted to photograph that specific facial expression. I knew how much it revealed in her admiration for her mother as a Black woman.”
