The documentary peer group of the Academy is the first peer group to achieve gender parity.

So proud of our trailblazing documentary community!

“The documentary branch, which has invited 63 percent women since 2016, is the first of the Academy's branches to move from majority male to gender parity since the membership drive began, according to its governor, director Roger Ross Williams. "Women power documentary filmmaking, whether they're directors or producers," says Williams, who also sits on the Academy's diversity committee. "I didn't understand how the doc branch could not have as many women as men. And so, every time I would reach out to the membership, I'd be like, 'Nominate a woman this year. Nominate a woman this year.' And this year we finally [achieved parity]."

People Magazine South Africa: Award-winning documentary filmmaker Dylan Valley's new VR film, AZIBUYE: THE OCCUPATION, is South Africa’s first VR/360 documentary at Sundance.

The provocative film chronicles two artists/activists (played by Masello Motana and Evan Abrahamse) who occupy an abandoned mansion in an affluent neighbourhood of Johannesburg. They proclaim their occupation to be an artistic and political act in defiance of inequalities in land ownership.

Portrait of a rose: photographs from Nick Knight’s garden

Can't wait for more Black artists to get access to these tools.--Lisa

Financial Times: For the rose pictures, Nick Knight has been using artificial intelligence (AI). As he explains it, "I’ve worked with an AI which will refocus, 'res up' and resharpen your image using the power of deep neural networks."

After being trained with millions of sample images, the AI looks for patterns and shapes in the photograph, compares it with the images it has learnt, and then applies shape and texture based on the knowledge database. It performs around two million operations per pixel to give results with as much detail and sharpness as possible. "It is," says Knight, "a totally fascinating way to work."

The result gives the print texture, something typically missing from digital prints but which has been, since the beginning of photography, vital and particular to the photographic print. In this case the texture is reminiscent of brushstrokes; from a distance they are gentle images of composition and colour but up close "quite violent and quite difficult," Knight says. "It’s got a passion to it."

USC Annenberg And Time’s Up Study Shows Common Pattern Of Lack Of Women And People Of Color At Film Festivals

Deadline: "Commissioned by the Time’s Up Foundation, the study analyzed the demographic makeup of film directors and festival programmers and executives across the top five global film festivals and the top 10 North American film festivals. Globally, the study found that only 25% of directors in competition sections across the last three years were women.

There is even more of a disparity for women of color. Only eight percent of film directors in competition at the top five film festivals were women of color – compared to 47% white men and 17% white women.

The study found a similar pattern in North America, where 71% of directors were men compared to 29% who were women. Likewise, 17% were white women and 12% were women of color – compared to white men, who made up 45% of film directors at North American festivals."

Shining a Spotlight on Film’s Overlooked Black Women

The "Black Women" film series, which began Friday, Jan. 17, and runs until February 13, features an expansive roster of 60 films, including The Watermelon Woman as well as films with iconic performances from the likes of Dandridge, Josephine Baker, Diana Sands, Lena Horne, and Pam Grier. Here, black actresses who are mainly known for supporting roles are revealed as leading ladies: Eartha Kitt, for example, playing a heartbreaking romantic lead in the underappreciated 1958 drama Anna Lucasta. Veteran television actress Diahann Carroll getting the spotlight in the timely 1974 romantic drama Claudine. And of course, there’s also Ethel Waters giving a fantastic performance in Vincente Minnelli’s Cabin in the Sky.

New Study: Crime Shows Are A 'PR Machine' For Law Enforcement

“People of color, especially Black women, were generally not cast as victims of crimes in the series, despite being victimized in real life by violence. In fact, the report cites something showrunners, network executives and producers are to have said to their writers when writing about victims: 'Viewers will change the channel if we make the crime victim Black, so you'll have to rewrite those characters and make them white instead.'"
