What If I Don't Want to Be a Hologram After I Die?

Gizmondo: Whitney Houston’s estate, for example, included her posthumous rights to publicity when she died. Houston’s sister-in-law and former manager Pat Houston controls that estate, meaning she ultimately makes the call on how the late singer’s name and image are used.

“Everything is about timing for me,” Pat recently told the New York Times while discussing plans for a hologram tour, among other projects. “It’s been quite emotional for the past seven years. But now it’s about being strategic.”

It’s October 2022, five years after the death of Tom Petty, and you and your family have just arrived at the Hollywood Bowl to see the late musician’s digital resurrection. It’s only lasers, of course, you know this, but as an ultra-realistic Petty zaps to life onstage, it’s a distant truth,...

The Problem with ‘Fixers’

Same thing goes for documentaries.

Columbia Journalism Review: The title “foreign correspondent” has long been synonymous with whiteness, maleness, and imperialism—journalists fly in from North America, Europe, and Australia to cover the poverty and wars of the non-Western world. In recent years, a push for diversity has meant that more women are pursuing stories in what was once the domain of men—conflict zones and fractured democracies—or in traditionally private female spaces. But the opportunities for journalists in non-Western nations to tell their own stories in international outlets have not been as great. Overwhelmingly, foreign reportage still relies on a model of Western, and largely white, reporters hiring local journalists in subservient roles.

In April, Neha Dixit, a journalist in India, received an email from a professor at Northwestern University. The subject read, “Fixer needed.” The message: “My colleagues and I are working on a story about illegal organ trafficking in India and are in need of sources for the story. We were wond...

Intro to 360 Cameras

ATTEND OUR VR CAMERAS CLASS ON JULY 13TH!

Registration is now open for our new "Intro to 360 Cameras" class. This 3-hour, $75 seminar is ideal for producers, DPs, editors, directors, and other film and TV professionals, who would like to learn the basics of virtual reality production. Educators who are producing, funding, or teaching immersive filmmaking are encouraged to attend as well.

Filmmaker Philip Sanchez will walk participants through the VR workflow, plus discuss the specs of four models of 360 cameras: The Samsung 360 (2017 version), Insta360 One X, GoPro Freedom 360 with an Omni rig, and the Kandao Obsidian R. Students will have the opportunity to watch sample VR footage from each camera in the last hour of the class.

This seminar is ideal for VR filmmaking newbies. If you have taken other VR classes or Unity classes, this class would not be appropriate. Knowledge of Adobe Premiere would be advantageous, but it is not required. If you have a 5-10 level of understanding of Adobe Premiere (on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest), it would definitely increase your level of understanding of the nuances of VR production.

Disney’s New ‘Lion King’ Is the VR-Fueled Future of Cinema

Wired Magazine: [Disney's new version of] THE LION KING was filmed entirely in virtual reality (well, save a single photographed shot). All the locations you know from the original—Pride Rock, the elephant graveyard, Rafiki’s Ancient Tree—exist, but not as practical sets or files confined to an animator’s computer. They live inside a kind of filmmaking videogame as 360-degree virtual environments, full of digitized animals, around which Jon Favreau and his crew could roam. Headsets on, filmmakers had access to all the tools of the trade, just in virtual form. Say you’re getting ready for a scene in which young Simba talks to Zazu, his father’s adviser, and the “sun” isn’t falling on Simba’s face the way it should. Favreau or visual effects supervisor Rob Legato could just add a “light” to boost the intensity.

Director Jon Favreau shot the remake of the animated classic inside virtual reality. He doesn't know what to call the result, but it looks like a real movie.

Community, Art, and AI: An Interview with Stephanie Dinkins

Stephanie Dinkins, who teaches at Stony Brook, spoke at one of our #BPMplus Mixers last November. Stephanie was inspired by her conversations with the artificial intelligence, known as Bina48 (the robot in the image, below), to create her own AI character. Stephanie's AI character will be based on the lives, beliefs, likes and dislikes or three women in her family, including herself--three generations of black history. The genre-melding AI piece, called NOT THE ONLY ONE, will comprise documentary, family memoir, and experimental fiction rolled into one artwork. Read the MIT interview with Stephanie in IMMERSE.

Here we present an in-depth look into Stephanie Dinkins’s practice with AI, robots, art, and community.

Virtual reality: how women are taking a leading role in the sector

The Guardian: When the Arab spring uprising began in 2010, filmmaker Tamara Shogaolu was living in Egypt. As she traveled around the country collecting oral histories of people’s experiences, she realized the role virtual reality (VR) could play in showcasing these stories. Her VR documentary, ANOTHER DREAM, debuted at the Tribeca film festival in April. It follows an Egyptian lesbian couple who, facing the post-revolution backlash against LGBT people, escape the country to seek asylum in the Netherlands.

“When you’re listening to someone’s voice, to be physically present in their memories is so interesting,” explains Shogaolu. During the production, the characters would describe their feeling of difference as people of color in majority-white spaces. And it was a feeling familiar to Shogaolu herself, as a black woman working in the male-dominated and white-majority world of tech.

The Whitney Houston of the 3D Hologram Tour Will Be Neither 3D nor a Hologram

TECH VOCAB 101: HOLOGRAM
"An Evening with Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour" is about to launch.

The digital character that the tour uses is not, technically, a hologram. So know your tech terms. Learn the difference between creating a Pepper's Ghost illusion (like the Tupac 'hologram' at Coachella years ago) and an actual, real deal hologram. Pepper's Ghost is a magic trick from the 1860s.

Slate says: But unlike Tupac’s performance, Houston’s image won’t rely on Pepper’s Ghost. “We’re way past Pepper’s Ghost,” says Tudor, though he didn’t provide other details about their proprietary technology. He did say, however, that the image is not a reflection and is a direct projection using a cutting edge, “military-grade” Epson laser projector. Whatever this projection is, Tudor confirms, it’s not 3D, though it may appear that way to the audience. “It’s what the projector does that makes it appear 3D,” he says.
