In today's "From Day To Day" on the weekly portion of Tetzaveh: An officiating priest had to put on 4 garments in the following order: breeches, tunic, girdle and mitre (head-gear). The High Priest - 8 Garments; breeches, tunic, girdle, robe, ephod? Breastplate, ('choshen'), mitre and plate of gold ('tzitz').
The garments worn by the priests had to be clean like new; when they became soiled they could not be washed but had to be changed for new ones. How marvelous was the appearance of the priests during their service in the Temple!
Only voluntary contributions were accepted for the building of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) in the desert; yet in two days' time more than enough was offered.
