The guiding force behind my doctoral dissertation is the concept of “whereness or place,” for it is that notion which anchors me to my life and to my work. Place has shaped my belief system and in particular my ecological identity – that part of me that is grounded in place and in the language of place.

It is not surprising then that as an adult, the natural world is my primary point of reference. I still situate myself in or near natural landscapes that feel familiar and comfortable to me and that hold significance in my life.

Libraries have been under a lot of the same stresses that everyone else has. But even though many libraries closed physically, they continued to serve their communities.

Because communities across the country are more diverse than ever, and becoming more so, it’s really important for librarians to spend time and effort building relationships with those in the community.

The banners spark conversation. When they are visible, they draw people to study and read them. In the Seattle park, passersby young and old took time to walk slowly by, reading the panels, and talking about the ways they have seen racism in their own lives. At the end of the event, participants wrote personal pledges regarding the fight against racism on the back of the banner.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, school buildings are almost universally open. While there are many voices expressing health and safety concerns, policymakers have decided that the best choice for children’s well-being is for them to be in school, in person in all but the most extreme cases of medical need. But what if we asked the children? What would they say?

As a Ph.D. student in learning sciences and a math education researcher who believes that young children are perceptive, reflective and brilliant, I embarked on a project to collect children’s stories of schooling during the pandemic.
