Angelia Denise Taylor (1966-2025)
We are all saddened by the passing of Angelia Taylor - the great Gospel singer known for her work with The Como Mamas.
Angelia left a big impression on me after having heard her live up close during one of her many trips up north to the Daptone studios in Brooklyn for recording sessions and live performances. It was while cutting with a live band for the first time for “Out Of The Wilderness” (released on 45). She always brought a unique and special energy, and a captivating low husky voice to the Como Mamas. For me, the best example of Angelia’s unique sound can be heard on one of my all-time favorite Daptone cuts “Move Upstairs” off of The Como Mamas album of the same name.
As a true gospel soul singer she was not about singing for herself but rather her community, church, friends and, most importantly, her family and children which she always talked about when she had your ear. Angelia Taylor will be sorely missed. I am sure she is looking down on us from her room upstairs as she has sung about many times.
Our deepest condolences to her family.
