One of my favorite things about checking the cameras is that you honestly never know what might show up. Most of the time I expect the usual wildlife, and then every once in a while something completely unexpected comes wandering through.

This one really caught my attention. My first thought was that it might be an otter, but what makes me question it is the location. It was walking down an old road about a quarter of a mile away from the nearest water, which seems like a pretty unusual place to find one.

I’m definitely curious what everyone else thinks because I’m not completely sure on this one.

Does this look like an otter to you, or could it be something else?

I’m curious what everyone considers “too many” does for a property this size. This place is only around 30 acres, but it has a pretty good mix of habitat with a pond, open field, and neighboring property that is mostly wooded.

I seem to have quite a few does using the area regularly, and now I’m starting to wonder at what point the numbers become excessive for a property this size. There’s also a small spike buck way in the back left for a little reference.

I know deer numbers can depend a lot on available food, cover, surrounding habitat, and how much movement there is between properties, so I’m curious how others judge it.

For those managing similar-sized properties, about how many does would you consider too many on roughly 30 acres?

I was lucky enough to catch this beautiful bear passing through. He seems to make an appearance around my deer patch once or twice every year, and it’s always pretty exciting when he shows up.

Usually he hangs around for a few days, helps himself to some corn, and then just as quickly as he appeared, he’s gone again. I never know exactly when he’ll be back, which makes catching a good photo of him feel even more special.

He’s definitely one of those visitors you don’t forget seeing.

I just wanted to introduce myself and share a little about why I’m here. I’m a wildlife rehabber, and recently I got a call about a buck that had gotten caught trying to get over a fence.

Unfortunately, it didn’t end well for him. His hoof became trapped in the fencing, and it turned into a serious situation. What really concerns me is that this isn’t the first time I’ve heard of something like this happening. I believe this is probably the fifth deer-related fence incident I’ve heard about just this year.

It’s always hard seeing wildlife get hurt this way, especially knowing how easily they can panic once they’re stuck.

On a happier note, I really enjoy seeing all the trail-camera wildlife everyone shares here. Thanks for letting me join in and for sharing all of your amazing sightings.

Has anyone else been seeing more deer getting caught or injured on fences lately?

Looks like he decided regular camouflage just wasn’t enough. ☺️ Somehow he managed to get himself wrapped up in all that corn and is now wearing his own homemade woodland disguise.

At first glance, he almost blends right into everything around him, but those antlers give him away pretty quickly. I have to admit, he looks pretty proud of his new outfit.

What do you guys think these two animals are? This was caught on a trail camera in West Central Illinois, and I’m having a hard time deciding exactly what I’m looking at.

We’ve had armadillos slowly making their way closer to this area, so that crossed my mind for one of them. The other one almost looks like a fox to me, but the nighttime picture makes it tough to tell for sure.

Anyone familiar with the wildlife around here want to take a guess? I’d appreciate the help! 🐾📸

A little update since the last time I posted about this buck. As of today, I met a gentleman who’ll be hunting the neighboring property, and his stand is going to be within about 20 yards of mine.

This is exactly why I’ve always said nothing is guaranteed when you decide to pass a deer because he might only be 2.5 or 3.5 years old. You can do everything possible to stack the odds in your favor, but sometimes another variable shows up that you simply can’t control.

What he’s doing is completely legal, and his stand is right along the property line, so it is what it is. Both properties are only around three acres at most, and I think the kill plot I’ve been growing has helped keep these deer hanging close to my side and around that property line.

For everyone who told me to pass this buck and let him grow another year, you can probably see why that decision isn’t always as simple as it sounds. Whether I’m in the woods or not, there’s a good chance somebody is going to get an opportunity at him this season. 🦌🌲

Any idea what might be going on with this deer? 🦌 I noticed something unusual and I’m not sure if it’s an injury, illness, or something else entirely. The one I missed last year is back, and I’ve been waiting to see him show up again. 🦌 Last season I had a chance at him during opening week of archery, but he came in right at dark and I just couldn’t make it happen.

He’s mostly nocturnal, but what really amazed me was how far he traveled. I was getting him on cameras across nearly two miles of our ranch, and a buddy of mine was also picking him up about another mile away. From what we could tell, this buck was covering close to three miles every night.

It’s pretty wild seeing him back again after watching his movements so much last year. Now I’m curious to see if he follows the same pattern this season or changes things up.

I had to work tonight, so I couldn’t take my youngest hunting like I wanted to. Thankfully, my oldest stepped up and took him instead.

There’s no phone service where they were, and to make things even more nerve-racking, a bear had managed to hit the battery eject button on the trail camera, so I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I was completely in the dark.

Then out of nowhere, this picture came through. My oldest had fixed the camera before they left, and there they were heading out with my youngest’s first bear. 🐻❤️

I can’t even explain how proud I am of those two. One brother stepping up, the other getting his first bear, and me getting to see that moment afterward… definitely one I’ll never forget.
