It was great to speak with Jon Batiste at the Legal Defense Fund’s annual awards gala.

By now, most people know that the version of the Pocahontas story that was presented in the 1995 Disney film is mostly fiction. But the story behind the composition of the film’s most famous song is not as well known. It was important to lyricist Stephen Schwartz to pay homage to the history and legacy of the Powhatan people on which the film is based, but in true American fashion, the source material he drew from as the inspiration for the song’s brilliant lyrics paints a through line to America’s long history of exploitation and misrepresentation of Native stories and voices.

Did you know about this long-standing racist practice in renal medicine? There are so many more examples just like this that create inequities around race in the medical field.

Why are so many Black women experiencing life-threatening health crises during pregnancy and childbirth? Unfortunately, there are no easy explanations, and no 'silver bullet' solutions. But in a country with already high maternal mortality rates, the disparities between Black maternal mortality and nearly every other racial grouping is glaring, and should be of great concern to society as a whole.

Elon Musk is a white supremacist. Argue with ya mama.

I’m talking about this on my podcast, “I’m All Over the Place” this week. Listen here: http://www.all over the place.buzzsprout.com

We’ve all been listening to “Cowboy Carter” and hopefully thinking a lot more about the contributions of Black women to Country music and Americana. I’d like to throw my proverbial hat in the ring and introduce you to several songs that I have put out over the years that could be considered “Americana.”
I originally came to Nashville to write this kind of music, so it is a huge passion of mine, and one that I’m really excited to share with you. Click this link to hear the full playlist: https://tinyurl.com/47cwu6ty

How much do you know about the history and legacy of Pastor John P. Kee? I’m doing a deep dive into his story with this Breakdown. Even if you don’t know a lot about gospel music, I suspect you’ll find his story to be quite fascinating.

Glad to see that after an acute illness, Pastor Key was back in the pulpit on Easter Sunday. Sending lots of healing to him today!

BBC 4 recently reached out and asked me to offer a few thoughts on Beyoncé‘s new country single, “Texas Hold ‘Em.” They specifically wanted me to comment about the history of Black people in country music, which I discussed at length on my radio show and podcast recently.

To hear my full thoughts on the history of Black people and country music, download the KJLH app or visit www.kjlhradio.com, or find the re-broadcast on my podcast, “I’m All Over the Place.“

So a couple more of these Murdoch-type tabloid publications have picked up the “Cruise Ship Ice Cream Death Party“ story. The latest one coming from the New York Post. They reached out to me for a quote and I wouldn’t give them one. I just referred them to the ships medic that confirmed my story online. In this video, which I just posted to TikTok, I gave an update on the veracity of this story, which, as it turns out, might have a connection to a recent lawsuit brought against the cruise line that I worked for. This may explain why so many of these publications have picked it up.

Visit “The Breakdown” merch store. I’m also getting on the road in March. Several performance dates on the East Coast and in the south. Hope to see you in person soon! Extensive commentary on this topic on my radio show on KJLH, and on my podcast, “I’m All Over the Place.“ Links here: https://linktr.ee/daratuckerb

I've said it before -- journalism is in a sad state. I've apparently made "The Sun" tabloid for this ridiculous video that inexplicably went viral on TikTok a few days ago. They've changed their algorithm, so I rarely get more than a few hundred thousand views these days on anything I post. Which is fine. Fewer trolls.

But this?? 🤣🤣🤣 For this to be at well over 1,000,000 views, and for it to be picked up by The Sun is... well, typical of 2024, and an indication that we're headed into really choppy waters where journalism is concerned.

(The story I told in this video has been verified by a ship medic in a follow up video I posted to my TikTok channel, BTW. I've never been called a 'liar' so many times in my life.🤣)

GETTING on a cruise can make you feel like you’re living a life of luxury – but below deck is another story. Taking to social media, American singer and former-cruise ship entertainer D…

I was honored to be asked to present a Black history program with Jay Marcus Daniels at Trinity Episcopal Church yesterday. Looking forward to getting out on the road and doing more singing next month.

The depiction of Black servants in Hollywood has evolved over time. During Hollywood's golden age, we rarely got a glimpse into the inner lives of these characters, and the actors who took those roles rarely got the opportunity to play roles whose primary purpose was not to serve the white protagonist.

In this Breakdown, I take a look at the evolution of Black servitude, both in film and on television. I'll examine how these depictions progressed to reflect shifting cultural norms, and how the actors who were relegated to playing these roles grappled with the implications of furthering those often limiting stereotypes in popular media.

Finally got this Breakdown on "Project 2025" done. I'll be doing a long-form deep dive on this topic for my KJLH radio show this Sunday. Find the link to stream that show in my bio.

Again, it's not my job to convince you to vote. But we should all be as well-informed as possible. Just a reminder, the bot farms and paid comment trolls are hard at work already. Keep on your toes & be on the look out for targeted messaging from questionable sources.

A few words on understanding the MAGA movement. As always, I have no vested interested in who you vote for. My job is to educate, inform and enlighten. I'm sharing the things I'm meditating on right now in the hopes that they'll be helpful those who are working through these same questions.

We're all navigating these waters as best we can. As long as we're pushing for the same goals, let's let each other land where we land. I'm going to keep fighting, learning and pushing for change in my own way. You do the same. Selah.

We got smarter and smarter every time she told these stories.
