Technical Overview: V-Engine Configurations
This illustration shows the evolution of V-engine layouts, defined by the number of cylinders and the angle between cylinder banks:
V2: 2 cylinders, simplest design, strong low-RPM torque (commonly used in motorcycles).
V4: More compact and better balanced, high performance with smoother operation.
V8: A performance standard; good balance of power, sound, and durability.
V10: High-revving with fast throttle response (famously used in Formula 1).
V12: Extremely smooth operation, linear power delivery, complex and costly.
V16–V24: Very rare; designed for extreme power and smoothness, but large and highly complex.
👉 More cylinders = smoother power and higher potential output
👉 Trade-offs increase in size, weight, mechanical complexity, and cost
