60 years ago, you came to Hollywood to see a movie. Now you come to be in one.
1960 β BOTTOM:
The marquee says "GRAUMAN'S CHINESE THEATRE - ELMER GANTRY" β that's real. Elmer Gantry was released July 7, 1960, directed by Richard Brooks, starring Burt Lancaster, Jean Simmons. It won Oscars for Burt Lancaster Best Actor, Shirley Jones Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It's about a con-man turned preacher β pure Hollywood.
The building is Grauman's Chinese Theatre at 6925 Hollywood Boulevard. Built over 18 months beginning January 1926, opened May 18, 1927 after raising $2 million by impresario Sid Grauman, following his Egyptian Theatre (1922). The pagoda you see is the same one in 2026. In 1960, the street had vertical neon β "HOLLYWOOD" sign, "THRIFTY DRUGS", "SEVEN SEAS RESTAURANT", 1960 Chevy Impala in baby blue, 1959 Cadillac with tailfins, palm trees that were 30 years younger.
2026 β TOP:
Same Chinese Theatre β now officially TCL Chinese Theatre β but the forecourt with handprints is still there. Next door, the building that says DOLBY THEATRE β that's where the Oscars have been held since 2002. The street is now Hollywood Walk of Fame stars embedded in black terrazzo, Sephora, Starline double-decker tour bus, Tesla Model Y. No more neon drug stores β now it's influencer photo ops every 5 feet.
What didn't change? That green-tiled pagoda roof has seen 98 years of premieres β from Cecil B. DeMille's "King of Kings" in 1927 to your TikTok in 2026.
