FBI Director Kash Patel said Friday that the federal law enforcement bureau is investigating “swatting” incidents that have targeted certain media figures in recent days.

Multiple right-wing content creators, including InfoWars host Chase Geiser, said this week that they have been the target of swatting incidents, which generally entail prank calls to emergency services that trigger a large number of armed police officers sent to a particular address.

Johns Hopkins University said on Thursday that it will lay off over 2,000 workers worldwide following the Trump administration’s termination of $800 million in federal funding for the institution.

The university, along with its affiliates, is the largest private employer in Maryland, contributing to more than 93,600 jobs in the fiscal year 2022, according to its previous economic impact report.

The layoffs involve 247 domestic U.S. workers for the academic institution and 1,975 positions outside the United States in 44 countries.

President Donald Trump is seeking to waive income taxes on individuals earning under $150,000 per year, said U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in two interviews this week.

“I know what [Trump’s] goal is ... no tax, for anybody who makes less than $150,000 a year. That’s his goal. That’s what I’m working for,” Lutnick told CBS News in an interview published Wednesday.

A day later, in an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Lutnick was asked by host Martha MacCallum about no income taxes on individuals earning less than $150,000. “It’s aspirational,” he said in response.

U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told Congress on Thursday that he has signed an agreement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the General Services Administration (GSA) to work with the U.S. Postal Service.

In a letter sent to congressional lawmakers, DeJoy said DOGE and the GSA will assist the independent government agency in “identifying and achieving further efficiencies.”

“This is an effort aligned with our efforts, as while we have accomplished a great deal, there is much more to be done,” DeJoy wrote. “We are happy to have others to assist us in our worthwhile cause. The DOGE team was gracious enough to ask for the big problems they can help us with.”

Columbia University said on March 13 that it has expelled or suspended some students who took over its Hamilton Hall last year amid pro-Palestinian protests, and temporarily rescinded the diplomas of others who have graduated.

In a campus-wide email, the university said its judicial board levied a range of sanctions against the students who occupied the building last year while protesting the Israel-Hamas war.

Those sanctions include multi-year suspensions, temporary degree revocations, and expulsions, Columbia wrote in a statement on its website. It said the return of suspended students will be overseen by the Columbia’s Life Office.

The U.S. Social Security Administration will no longer let people change their bank information in calls with the agency, it said on March 12.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) said it is retaining all other phone services, describing reports that alleged otherwise as inaccurate.

“SSA is increasing its protection for America’s seniors and other beneficiaries by eliminating the risk of fraud associated with changing bank account information by telephone,” the agency said in a statement.

A federal judge ruled on March 12 against President Donald Trump in a case that could have major implications regarding his attempts to slash the size of the federal government.

U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan ruled that the president does not have the power to remove Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) Chairwoman Susan Tsui Grundmann, a Democrat, and ordered her to be reinstated.

Grundmann’s reinstatement gives the FLRA a 2–1 Democrat majority until her term ends in July. Without her, the FLRA was down to one Democrat member and one Republican, suggesting that it could have been split on issues surrounding key Trump decisions on cuts to the federal labor force—most notably spearheaded by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to intervene and at least partially roll back multiple preliminary injunctions courts have issued against his executive order to restrict birthright citizenship.

In a brief filed on March 13, Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris told Chief Justice John Roberts that courts had gone too far in issuing nationwide injunctions. The Supreme Court, she said, should limit two of the injunctions—from Washington state and Maryland—to the order’s effect on particular plaintiffs. Another from Massachusetts should be stayed in full, she said.

Harris also asked the court to stay the injunctions in a way that would allow executive agencies to develop and issue guidance explaining how they would implement Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship.

Police arrested 98 protesters on March 13 after they occupied the lobby of Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, staging a loud demonstration in support of Palestine and against the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian student activist who led protests at Columbia University condemning Israel’s military response to the Hamas terror attacks of Oct. 7, 2023.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) repeatedly ordered demonstrators to leave before officers moved in, arresting 98 individuals on charges including trespassing, obstruction, and resisting arrest, according to a police briefing.

The protesters were affiliated with Jewish Voice for Peace, which describes itself as a progressive Jewish anti-Zionist group. “As Jews, we are taking over Trump Tower to register our mass refusal,” the organization said in a statement. “We will not stand by as this fascist regime criminalizes Palestinians and those calling for an end to the Israeli government’s U.S.-funded genocide.”
