Publisher ~ Flatiron Books 🖋 An Amazon Best Book of August 2022: Laugh out loud moments give way to galvanizing moments in this unputdownable debut by Rasheed Newson. Set in the 1980s, My Government Means to Kill Me follows the trajectory of a young Black man who ditches his wealthy Midwest family to go be free and uninhibited in New York. When not spending time in men's bath houses, he gets an education in the Civil Rights movement, community organizing, and the fight for gay rights, among other things. Newson, the writer and producer behind Narcos, The Chi, and Bel-Air, lends his cinematic eye to his novel, which makes the grit, the s*x, the activism, and the political struggle all the more atmospheric and immersive. In short, I’ve never been prouder of an 18-year-old narrator who leads us through the New York City streets, and compels not just his friends and network to action, but the reader too. —Al Woodworth, Amazon Editor

So, I just finished reading Four Treasures of the Sky by Jenny Tinghui Zhang (published by Flatiron Books). My godfather sent it to me earlier this summer saying, “The book has it all. Anti-Asian violence, s*x trafficking, gender ambiguity, and lynching in Idaho during the 19th century. [It is] well-wrought, quite readable…perhaps it will help you with your work…” This book was all of that and then some. I could not put it down. Zhang’s writing is engaging, and the pacing of the book invites the reader to keep going. My heart is still racing a half hour later as I try to give justice to the book and its main character, Daiyu. Though I have my syllabus for Asian American Literature pretty much set for the year, I believe I am going to offer this up as a second semester reading for my honors students. I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book. That said, there are scenes that are hard to read, not from the writing, but from the situations our heroine finds herself in. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

“My mind started to move into the space that was The Shining, thoughts of my mother, father, melting away and re-emerging as the much more manageable ghosts born out of King's imagination. Though I loved everything by King, I'd always found this particular book to be spellbinding. I remembered finding it in the library one day, after wandering the shelves, my fingers brushing the spines, trying to convince myself to check something more realistic out, something more patently educational, and failing-and moving, like I was haunted, toward the horror aisle. For some reason, I hadn't seen this book before, and finding it, a King I'd never read, felt like uncovering a magic key, one with infinite potential, One that opened doors that acted as portals to other worlds. Elated, I brought it to the front desk, and from the minute I started reading, felt like most people feel when they're falling in love.” . Finished reading White Horse by Erika T. Wurth… I received this as an advanced readers copy from Flatiron Books as it doesn’t release until November. Usually, I try to keep my quotes from books to a few sentences but when I read this passage, it was as though the author was whispering directly into my soul. The Shining is my favorite Stephen King book and seeing it referenced (and multiple times, might I add) made me incredibly happy. As far as the rest of the book is concerned, I loved it. Based on the blurbs, I was anticipating a straight up horror book… apparently, I have been desensitized because this book didn’t “scare” me. What it did do, however, was keep me up to the wee hours of the morning because the story was so well written, the timing so perfectly executed, that I couldn’t put it down. I loved the characters, primarily Kari, the flawed and damaged antihero. Can’t wait to dive into more of this Author’s works!
