In 1974, farmers digging a well near Xi’an, China uncovered one of the most astonishing archaeological finds ever made, the Terracotta Army. Created over 2,200 years ago to guard the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of China, this underground army includes thousands of soldiers, horses, and chariots, each with distinct facial features, hairstyles, and expressions.

While many figures share underlying molds, artisans refined them by hand, adjusting features and details so that each one appears unique. The result is an army that feels individual, not replicated.

Originally, they were painted in vivid colors, but most of that pigment vanished within minutes of exposure to air after excavation.

And the tomb they were built to protect? It remains largely unopened.
