Hi, I’m Marie Ann Altuve! Founder and podcast host of Self Made Babe. 👩🏻‍💻📲

There are a few new faces here since I decided to resurrect this Instagram from the dead, so naturally I need to reintroduce myself because we’re best friends now. Those are the rules. 👯‍♀️

I’m 30, living in New York City, and at my core I am really just a girl with WiFi and an unreasonable amount of belief in herself.

I’m a first-generation American. My entire bloodline is Venezuelan. I moved from Miami to NYC for my husband’s career, which sounds very chic and romantic until you actually have to rebuild your entire life, career, friendships, routines, and sense of identity in one of the most intimidating cities on Earth at 30. Lmk if you’re on the same boat.

Before New York, I was working full-time in luxury real estate in Miami. Then I moved here, got my New York real estate license because apparently I enjoy giving myself side quests, and now I’m figuring out how to break into the NYC market.

Delusion that I’ll figure it out: unwavering.

But there’s another part of my life that doesn’t always make it onto Instagram.

I have a master’s degree in marketing. I’ve spent years working in branding, social media, content, and digital marketing. I’ve built businesses, helped other brands build theirs with my marketing agency nyc creative agency | detailist 👩🏻‍💻, changed careers, started over, made money in ways I didn’t originally plan for and generally refused to accept the idea that I have to pick one thing and be that person forever.

Which is really what Self Made Babe has always been about.

Building the career. Building the income. Building the friendships. Building the confidence. Building a life that actually feels like yours.

And occasionally having an existential crisis somewhere between all of the above.

Where you’re standing now was once the goal.

Sometimes I think we get so busy adjusting to the life we prayed for that we forget to notice we’re already living inside it.

I have wanted to live in New York since I was nine years old, when I came here for the first time wearing a leather coat with a cheetah-print faux-fur lapel and, in my mind, absolutely eating. Full Cheetah Girl delusion. At nine.

And now I live here.

Which sounds very romantic until there is, for example, a mouse in your apartment.

I don’t think I expected the adjustment to take as much out of me as it did. There’s something strangely disorienting about moving to a new city for your partner’s career instead of your own. You arrive in this place you’ve dreamed about forever, but suddenly you’re also trying to figure out where you fit inside it.

How do I build a career here? How do I grow when my network is tiny? How do I make this city feel like mine too?

And I think there’s a very specific kind of impostor syndrome in that.

But then I remember: nine-year-old me would lose her mind if she could see this.

The apartment. The city. The life.

Even with the mice.

Sometimes grace is just letting yourself admit that you’ve already made it to places you once thought were very far away.
