New Masses Media Public Relations

New Masses Media Public Relations New Masses Media is a PR, publishing and production firm fusing the touch of classic publicity with contemporary media's reach at an affordable price.

Our campaigns have elevated the profile of an array of independent businesses in New York and beyond. NEW MASSES MEDIA was created by writer, musician and cultural organizer John Pietaro as a service for creative artists and events on the Left and in the underground. New Masses Media is the producer of the annual Dissident Arts Festival and other events which bridge radical arts to revolutionary politics. ...............New Masses Media Relations crafts insightful PR campaigns for the hard-to-classify! Free Jazz soloists, experimental composers, revolutionary writers, rad balladeers, outspoken actors, dissident dancers and a myriad of others whose creativity is as daring as their social statements. This project is the outgrowth of Pietaro's successful outreach for his own NY-based events including the annual Dissident Arts Festival (founded in 2006) and ranging from the 1989 Knitting Factory collective concert and the 1998 Hanns Eisler Centenary Festival through the 2014 Tribute to New York Eye and Ear Control concert---and beyond. Recent events publicized under the New Masses name include the series of concerts in honor of Free Jazz underground icon Will Connell, Dec 2014, The Stone, NYC); New Masses is also engaging in public relations for artists signed to Unseen Rain Records, as well as various independents of the creative community. Pietaro is a Staff Writer of "The NYC Jazz Record". His articles, essays and reviews have also been published in Z Magazine, the Nation, Political Affairs, the People's World, All About Jazz, 5th Estate, the Industrial Worker, the Socialist, Struggle and a variety of others. He also wrote a chapter in the book SDS: A Graphic History by Harvey Pekar & Paul Buhle (Hill and Wang, 2008), self-published Night People a book of contemporary proletarian literature, and is working on an extensive history of radical arts. As a musician Pietaro, a percussionist, has performed and/or recorded with Karl Berger, Ras Moshe, Alan Ginsberg, Fred Ho, Matt Lavelle, Salim Washington, Erika Dagnino and many more. New Masses Media was named for the powerful Left-wing cultural/political magazine that thrived from the 1920s-40s and featured an all-star stable of authors. The influence is not only based on that periodical's considerable masthead: Pietaro is an activist who works by day in the labor movement. Select events organized, publicized and hosted by John Pietaro: -Dissident Arts Festival, NYC (2006-09: Howland Cultural Center, Beacn NY; 2010-13: Brecht Forum, NYC; 2014: El Taller NYC; 2015: El Taller and ShapeShifter Lab, Brooklyn NY); 2016: 5C, NYC; 2017: 5C and Winston Unity Hall, NYC -New Masses Nights performance series -Tribute to New York Eye and Ear Control (June 2014, Firehouse Space, Brooklyn NY) -Drums for Warren: Benefit Concert for Warren Smith (Jan 2014, Brecht Forum NYC) -October Jazz Revolution (2012 17 Frost Theatre of the Arts, Brooklyn NY; 2013 Cornelia St Café, NYC) -Woodstock Woody Guthrie Birthday Concert (2007-2009, Colony Café, Woodstock NY) -Dissident Arts Festival, Hudson Valley NY (2006-2009, Howland Cultural Center, Beacon NY) -Phil Ochs Fest (2003 Sidewalk Café NYC; 2005-2009, Colony Café, Woodstock NY) -Made for You and Me: Tribute to Woody Guthrie (2001, Winston Unity Center, NYC) -various May Day Concerts (NYC and/or Beacon NY, 2000-2012 ) -Hanns Eisler Centenary Festival (1998, Brecht Forum NYC) -The Assembly: Concert of Unheard New Music Artists (1989, Knitting Factory, NYC) Pietaro also aided the public relations for ‘Celebrate the Children of Resistance’ Rosenberg commemoration (2003 City Center, NYC) John Pietaro (646) 599-0060 [email protected] or [email protected]

New York Junk stay true to gritty punk in 'Dreaming'

My review of the new CD by NEW YORK JUNK is out now in @thevillagesun -
“Dreaming, the latest release by New York Junk, is a seven-song E.P. which only magnifies the urgency. The band’s return to its original trio format allows for more space and rawness. Calling on what noir novelist Cornell Woolrich referred to as ‘the deep of night, the dregs, the sediment at the bottom of the coffee cup. The blue hour’ —New York Junk’s music is like a blast of shrapnel”

Who Are We?

I’m so pleased to have one of my pieces of short fiction, “The Far Side of the Road”, published in the international anthology ‘WHO ARE WE?’ (UK: Willowdown 2020). It’s a collection of ten stories on identity by writers from various countries. My selection, a tale of gentrification, aging and alienation, was performed several years ago by Amina Baraka and the Red Microphone as a dramatic reading with music. Many thanks, once again, to editor/publisher Trevor Maynard.

BUSINESS AS UNUSUAL: Gratis PR Lifeline to NYC Performers, Small Businesses

New York, NY: In this time of Covid-19 and the shuttered venues in its wake, New Masses Media Public Relations is offering limited free marketing and public relations to all affected New York City artists, entertainment workers and aligned small businesses. With such uncertainty about the novel coronavirus and the length of such closures, the firm is availing itself to aid in the effort of keeping professional identities afloat. New Masses Media has stated that there is a moral obligation to bolster affected performing artists and the independent venues that feature them, as well as related small businesses in the wider community.

The marketing/public relations aid will include social media, the creation of sizzle reels (video imagery) and brand polishing, to commence immediately and continue as needed. Such campaigns will conclude on May 20, 2020 at which time New Masses Media will reevaluate the needs and effectiveness of each. The impact that the current climate will have on artists unable to perform in venues can be devastating and the closures will have a similar impact on the independent performance spaces, taverns and bars. The firm, with its mission, “Classic PR, Contemporary Spin”, has a history of working within the creative community, non-profit organizations and events toward the greater good. Interested parties should be in touch with Laurie Towers [email protected]

She's Raising The Bar

You know what ? Who says it can’t be “Fitness Friday” ANY day ? Right about now I’m thinking we need it .. 💪

“Let's hear it for the ladies”
#WomensHistoryMonth

At one point in your life or someone you know have had to get a set of X-rays done. There's a backstory of “Herstory” history, according to Laurie Towers and Elite Ziegelman of She's Raising The Bar!
Marie (Madam) Curie was the very first woman to win a Nobel Prize TWICE in addition to her pioneering research on radioactivity. She established the Curie Institutes, which still remain vital as centers of medical research in both Paris and her homeland of Warsaw.
Her participation in World War I was development of mobile radiography units that provided the ability to supply the use of X-rays to field hospitals.
Although she never lived long enough to be amused at the countless comic book superheroes powering "X-ray vision”, Marie Curie’s contribution to our everyday life and health is nothing short of priceless!

Café Bohemia hosts West Village Word’s Neo-Beat experience
New York, NY: West Village Word, a monthly curation at the legendary Cafe Bohemia by poet and jazz journalist John Pietaro, launches Wednesday, February 26. This month’s artists, featured in 45-minute sets, are downtown perennials Puma Perl & Friends and rising stars Lindsey Wilson & the Human Hearts. Pietaro’s duo SHADOWS will play a brief opening to each set. The series, planned for the last Wednesday of each month, will present integrated spoken word and music, conjuring Greenwich Village's underground arts past while exploring today’s unique JazzPoetry, Neo-Beat and Post-Punk poets.
Café Bohemia was a favorite 1950s haunt of jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey and Cannonball Adderly as well as the original Beat Generation writer, Jack Kerouac. The club, recently re-opened in its original address, is already being touted as a space for a creative community displaced by ever-rising costs. “The heritage of this place is built into its foundation”, Café Bohemia manager Christine Santelli states. “You can feel it. Between 1955 and ’60, most every jazz great played here and many recorded live on the club’s stage”. The space’s history goes back to the 1940s when, as the Pied Piper, it hosted stride piano pioneer James P. Johnson and traditional jazz trumpeter Max Kaminsky.
The current focus celebrates Café Bohemia’s rich past as well as associated Village performing arts, then and now. With live music scheduled seven nights per week—from the “cool” progressive and traditional “hot” jazz schools, rollicking blues and folk, and a new residency by noted singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked, the club’s promise has quickly been realized. “All that was missing was performance poetry”, said West Village Word curator Pietaro. “But the Beats walked these quarters, so I knew it needed an integration of spoken word and music”.

Harvey Weinstein didn’t invent the humiliation of sexual harassment but his case has finally brought the topic to millions of discussions, texts, opinion pieces and placards. It’s NEVER time to shut it down as the silencing of the victim, since time immemorial has allowed oppression and abuse to continue. With a passion. On this week’s edition of “She’s Raising the Bar”, hosts Laurie Towers and Elite Ziegelman engage in the discussion with a Roundtable of a veteran model, a dancer and a poet to explore the many faces of sexual harassment.
