STOP DROPPING LINKS AND START THINKING LIKE AN ARTIST.
As I scroll through endless posts in unsigned artist Facebook groups, I can't help feeling that far too many talented people are simply wasting their time.
Spotify link.
YouTube link.
SoundCloud link.
No introduction. No story. No context. Nothing about who you are or why anyone should give up three minutes of their day to listen.
It's vanity over sanity.
And here's another question...
How many of you dropping links everywhere have actually registered your works with a PRO?
How many actually know what a PRO is, what it does, and how performance royalties find their way back to you?
Because getting somebody to play your music is only part of the equation. If your music starts getting played, you should understand how your rights and royalties work.
At SSR, we receive a huge number of song links every day from artists using Gmail accounts with no artist bio, no background, no story and often nothing more than "check out my new track."
Let me tell you what happens to those links.
They go nowhere.
You'll probably receive our polite copy and paste response thanking you for sharing your music, but we're not chasing you around the internet trying to work out who you are.
Collectively, the people behind SSR have many years of experience across the recording industry. We have unsigned artists, people who've worked with major and independent labels, music management, radio and A&R.
We're interested in serious artists.
That doesn't mean you need expensive management, a record deal, a fancy website or thousands of followers.
It means TAKE YOURSELF SERIOUSLY.
Know your rights.
Understand your royalties.
Tell people who you are.
Tell us why you wrote the song.
Give someone a reason to press PLAY.
And stop assuming that throwing a Spotify link into 25 Facebook groups constitutes music promotion.
It doesn't.

Your music might be brilliant.
But if all you give the world is a naked link, don't be surprised when the world scrolls straight past it.
