The legendary bassist behind literally everything you’ve ever heard from the ‘60s says she’s declining her induction because it doesn’t reflect the teamwork behind those hits—and also because calling her a “Wrecking Crew” member is, in her words, “a terrible insulting name.” Instead of basking in Cleveland’s glow, she’s shining a spotlight on the 350+ studio musicians who made pop history in the shadows. Consider this a masterclass in humility, jazz chops, and righteous defiance.

Juneteenth is the day the last Black folks in Texas got the news they were free — two years late, but freedom rang anyway, loud and ragged like a busted trumpet that still hits the note. June 19, 1865: Union soldiers show up in Galveston and tell the enslaved people, “Hey, y’all been free since Lincoln said so — they just didn’t tell you.”

So what’s it mean now? It’s the real Independence Day for folks who built America but didn’t get a seat at the table. It’s barbecue smoke, backyard drums, aunties dancing barefoot on grass, and stories that remind you that freedom is never handed over neat and polite — you gotta grab it, tune it up, and play it loud enough so nobody can ignore you again.

To us, Juneteenth ain’t just history — it’s proof that no lie lasts forever, and no chain can hold a spirit that knows its own song. So crank the volume, pass the plate, and remember: we’re still writing the verses to freedom, every damn day.
