Can DJs be understood as workers, not just performers?
From DJs Against Apartheid and nightlife workers to cultural boycotts, labor organizing, and the broader conversation around Palestine and BDS, the dance music world is increasingly confronting questions far outside the dancefloor.
Nightlife is often framed around individual artists, but every scene depends on a larger ecosystem: promoters, bartenders, security teams, lighting crews, organizers, and cultural workers whose labor makes nightlife possible.
In her latest essay, Sumona Gupta explores solidarity, workers’ power, club culture, and the political role artists can play in shaping culture and collective action.

Australian music copyright company APRA AMCOS has just reapplied for five years of operation licensing. Meanwhile, more and more artists and members raise concerns over their practices and lack of transparency.

Musicians and claim they were denied access to board meeting records at a recent visit to the office. Now, member has submitted an official complaint against the company, with allegations including unexplained negative royalty entries and inaccessibility to usage data.
