We are extremely proud of the film we made with this young woman, in collaboration with Vital Voices, Priti Patkar and Prerana Anti-Human Trafficking. Hats off to HMC collaborators Max Bartick, Chris Mendes, Raj Desai, Pisei Chea and Dan Radlauer who all gave of themselves to make it beautiful. Glad to see she is doing well!
In the year 2005, a 4-year-old was enrolled in Prerana’s Kamathipura Night Care Centre. She was really young and took a while to adjust to the new environment. A few years later, her mother wanted her to move to a safer place, away from the threats of the red-light area. Finally, in the year 2010, she walked into Prerana’s Naunihal home for girls. Not much of a talker, she had always been fond of reading. It was in 2014 that we shared her story with the world (via this wonderful video (https://goo.gl/f8q871) put together by Vital Voices). Today, the girl you see in this video exudes confidence; a voracious reader she nurtures opinion articulately, and doesn't keep her knowledge to herself. When you visit our Naunihal shelter facility, you will find her either in the library reading about Sudha Murthy, Ambedkar or other personalities who inspire her or sharing her learnings. She is also an ardent badminton player. Currently, a 12th standard Arts student, she aspires to be a librarian. She aspires! And that makes us very happy.
At Prerana, we have always tried our best that the children who succumb to any form of abuse find a safe space to share, unwind, and most importantly, dream. We are glad to have been able to do that by offering consistent opportunities and providing a stable environment to grow. Soon after her 12th, she wants to enrol for a course to be a librarian. She dreams of being surrounded by books all her life, but the best part is she knows it is possible!
