Feral Woman Reading Club is this Saturday, October 3rd at 1PM ET!

Theme: the power of language and critical thought.

We’ll be reading two essays:
• George Orwell’s Politics and the English Language
• Toni Morrison’s 1993 Nobel Prize Lecture

Both pieces can be read/listened to in under an hour (so even though the meeting is this Saturday, you still have time to read!)
Both tackle how the demise of language largely leads to the demise of civilization. Despite being known for 1984 and Animal Farm, Orwell especially shines in his essays, and Morrison’s audio of the speech really enriches the experience of reading it.

I chose this theme of “language and critical thought” because I’ve seen first-hand how people are using more idiotic slang and AI-slop-esque terms to describe things without any precision. And while it is fun and silly sometimes to speak this way, it does have a big impact on our cognition and ability to think critically about ourselves and society.

Looking forward to seeing you there. Join via the link in my bio!

You don’t need to know where you’re going. It’s enough to know something’s wrong.

I got fired from Palantir after seven weeks on the job.

After five years cycling through firings, chronic illness, and unemployment, I finally let myself hear “this is not my life,” and wonder “what if I do what I want for the next 10 years?”

I wrote about it, and so many of you commented, DMed, and shared your similar experiences. It’s been really cool connecting with a lot of you and seeing that we are not alone in this feeling.

You don’t need to know where you’re going. It’s enough to know something’s wrong.

I got fired from Palantir after seven weeks on the job. My manager complimented me on my blazer and then told me I wasn’t exceptional.

After five years cycling through firings, chronic illness, and unemployment, I finally let myself hear “this is not my life.” Instead of worrying about what would come next, I figured, “what if I do what I want for the next 10 years?”

I wrote about it, and so many of you commented, DMed, and shared your similar experiences. It’s been really cool connecting with a lot of you and seeing that we are not alone in this feeling.

Two years ago, I was fired from my prestigious tech job after only seven weeks. After complimenting my blazer (?) and saying, “today’s your last day,” he rounded it out with a final “You are not exceptional.”

Security-escorted out of the building, I sat on a stoop a few blocks away in downtown NYC and thought “I cannot do this again.”

This is the hardest thing I’ve ever written. For three years, I was caught in a cycle of firings, unemployment, and chronic health issues. It never occurred to me that my health issues could be coming from the same jobs I told myself I so desperately “needed.”

a girl got 1.3M views translating my essay into spanish and i was a jealous hag about it. At first I was really excited but then I started dreading seeing it, especially because I was struggling to figure out how to get people to engage with my writing. I was so ashamed because this was not the hot! Sexy! unbothered! look of successful people. But then when I let myself be jealous and actually see what I was jealous of, I could see this blessing for what it really was.

This essay, “it’s okay to be jealous but you have to do something about it” is about metabolizing jealousy for good. It’s definitely more personal, which is why the full thing + audio is for paid subscribers of my publication, Feral Woman! if you’re new here, you can subscribe for free and get my free monthly flagship essays, linked in bio.

Excited to hear what you think about this one :)
