Dear Tide Risers and Friends,
I am heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Tide Risers Founding Member and very dear personal friend of mine, Laura Torrisi. She passed unexpectedly but peacefully leaving behind a loving family and an enormous community of friends.
‘Friend’ doesn’t do justice to Laura’s and my relationship of over thirty years. Laura was my first professional boss, my cherished mentor, my thought partner, my creative spark generator, and an esteemed member of my ‘kitchen cabinet’, without whom I never made any important life decisions. She was the beloved matriarch of my urban family in New York and present for every important family event for the past three decades.
I loved her dearly, and cannot imagine what my life would have been like without her. She taught me everything I needed to know about running a business, raising daughters, and creating a home. She was my refuge when I needed a safe port and unreservedly my most stalwart supporter, cheering me on no matter how outlandish my latest project may have seemed. She was one of the first to sign up for Tide Risers when I founded it in 2017 and has been a presence at our gatherings ever since.
The day after Laura passed, Banksy posted his latest installation of a street bollard casting a shadow of a lighthouse, with the caption 'I want to be what you saw in me.' Well, I couldn't have said it better myself. I took this as a reminder of the importance of mentors in our lives and our responsibility to live up to our potential as mentors to others. So I've decided to postpone our scheduled topic for this month, and instead focus tomorrow's Abundant Learning session on mentorship. I hope you will join me for this important conversation.
Keep the tide rising, my friends.
Lara
