Today we celebrate JUNETEENTH on Radio Theatre For Your Soul - Where Storytellers Gather...Around the Mic!

What is Juneteenth? It is a holiday rooted in the history of slavery in the United States, which lasted over 200 years.

On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring enslaved people in Confederate states to be free. However, in places like Texas, slavery continued for more than two years as enslavers ignored the order.

On June 19, 1865, after the Civil War had ended, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with federal troops and issued General Order No. 3, announcing that all enslaved people were free.

This day became known as Juneteenth.
