Yesterday, we donated a total of $1600 (Beachy Media $1005 + Donors $611) to two families affected by Hurricane Harvey. We sent $800 money orders directly to each family. These folks were identified courtesy of nurse/hero Kathleen Murtagh Bradley who flew down to provide emergency aid in the days following Harvey.
Here are their stories:
Family #1: Molly, Claire (10), Noelle (7)
Molly and her two daughters are currently living in her sister's small trailer in Orange, Texas after their home was destroyed. The house was completely flooded and unrepairable. They lost all of their belongings due to mold. Molly suffers from Bell's Palsy and has a difficult time finding employment opportunities. FEMA relief is still pending until the inspector can arrive at their home to officially condemn it. Given the issues in Florida and Puerto Rico, the timeline for FEMA is TBD. Concurrently, they were denied funding from the Red Cross and are attempting to reapply. Molly plans to use the funds for basic necessities - food, clothing, gas - but she explicitly asked if she could buy each of her daughters a toy since they only were able to save one Barbie each.
Family #2: Christopher & Tallaria (couple) and 2 daughters
Shortly after their home was destroyed in Texas, Chris and Tallaria relocated to Shreveport, LA to find work. They both landed jobs 2-3 days out of the week. They are currently living in a hotel courtesy of funds from the American Red Cross. They have 3 weeks of housing remaining from this grant. Although their house wasn't completely underwater, the wind, mold, and mildew destroyed everything. On the phone Christopher said, "My motto is if you don't work you don't eat. I feel like God does things for a reason and we are going to get up every day and keep plugging to make things okay for our girls." Tallaria, Chris, and their daughters plan to relocate permanently to Shreveport. The $800 will be used to put a down payment on permanent housing (and one Bud Light which Chris asked specifically if he could split with Tallaria).
Special thanks to everyone who donated. We are keeping our GoFundMe page up and running for another week. If you feel compelled, we encourage you to throw a few dollars our way. All additional funds raised with be split between the above two families.
