On Wednesday, February 28, Richard Lewis passed away in his home in LA. Below are some words from Chris Murray, who wrote the preface to his 2015 title ‘Reflections from Hell’

I first got to know Richard Lewis as a rare book collector of musical titles at Govinda Gallery, and then as his collaborator on Reflections from Hell: Richard Lewis’ Guide On How Not To Live. It was my great pleasure to edit Reflections from Hell, write the preface and to bring it to publication with powerHouse Books. Working on that book together Richard and I became great friends.

The last time I was with Richard in person, just last year in Los Angeles with his wonderful wife Joyce, he gave me a framed drawing, taken off the wall of his home, by the artist Carl Titolo. Carl’s drawings accompany Richard's ‘Refections’ in his powerHouse book. The drawing he gave me had been inscribed by Carl to Richard in February 2003. It said “Richard…Thanks for the empty wall! Carl.” Richard was an avid collector of Titolo's art, as is Richard's friend Larry David. The inscription reflected the fact that Richard had bought everything off the walls of Titolo’s studio. It meant so much to me that Richard gave me that drawing. Carl had passed on only a few years earlier.

I wrote in my preface to Reflections from Hell: “I won’t soon forget Lewis’ words combined with Titolo’s works on paper. The collaboration immediately engaged me in a way that was intimate and personal while at the same time existential and universal. Their work together is a contemporary personification of creative angst from which we can laugh at the dilemmas of life we all face”.

Richard Lewis was one of the kindest people I have known. What a blessing to have him in my life. Saddened as I was at news of my dear friend passing on, I am comforted by the legacy he leaves for us all. Richard Lewis... a comedic genius, a devoted husband and a true friend.

Mike Tyson
By Lori Grinker
Text by Bruce Silverglade

It all began with an art school photography assignment: Lori Grinker was shooting a project on young boxers under the guidance of the legendary trainer Cus D’Amato. Her main focus became a nine-year-old boxer Billy Hamm. While photographing him, Cus wandered over and asked why Lori was shooting that kid, when the bigger kid in the corner working a speed bag would one day be the heavyweight champion of the world! The kid was a then 13-year-old Mike Tyson.

Over the next decade Lori would photograph the coterie that surrounded Mike; Cus’s funeral, going home to Brownsville, old friends, trips abroad, in hotel suites before and after fights, his hook-up with Robin Givens, their wedding, their divorce, and the training and fights in between until Tyson’s first defeat–the Buster Douglas fight in 1991. This is a side of the Mike Tyson story rarely seen or shared.

Described by The New York Times as, “a treasure of fashion insiders,” Take Ivy was originally published in Japan in 1965, setting off an explosion of American-influenced “Ivy Style” fashion among students in the trendy Ginza shopping district of Tokyo. The product of four sartorial style enthusiasts, Take Ivy is a collection of candid photographs shot on the campuses of America’s elite, Ivy League universities. The series focuses on men and their clothes, perfectly encapsulating the unique academic fashion of the era. Whether lounging in the quad, studying in the library, riding bikes, in class, or at the boathouse, the subjects of Take Ivy are impeccably and distinctively dressed in the finest American-made garments of the time.

This is our most SF book ever, though he did live in the EV near me. The whole package is SF and homage to this city that made this poet and visionary. Thanks City Lights Booksellers & Publishers

STARTING SOON: City Lights and powerHouse Books will celebrate the publication of MATERIAL WEALTH: Mining the Personal Archive of Allen Ginsberg by Pat Thomas, with a discussion between the author and Peter Hale, executor at the Allen Ginsberg Estate.

A prolific poet, raconteur, activist, and thinker, Allen Ginsberg was also a prolific collector, meticulously saving letters, postcards, draft notes and manuscripts, photographs and snapshots, appearance bills and rally broadsheets, not only featuring him personally, but also his fellow poets, singers, lovers, writers, journey companions, friends, and agitators. Gathered here publicly for the first time is his personal archive of events and experiences documenting his life as a young man, breakaway poet, expansive spirit, curious intellectual traveler, and relentless enthusiast of the provocative and the profane.

Packed with ephemera you’ve never seen, MATERIAL WEALTH is a smorgasbord of things that most of us would have tossed away decades ago: notes to oneself, accounting statements, letters of intent, fan and media crushes, criticisms and critiques, posters of events now considered historical and cultural canon, political manifestos, et al.

These are just a few of the most intriguing items folded between the pages of the one Ginsberg book that has never been—and needed to be done: a visual annotated compendium that reveals one of the unparalleled minds of his generation.

Join us in-person at the bookstore, or view the conversation on Zoom, from wherever you are in the world!

David Yaffe wrote a beautiful piece on Pat Thomas’ “Material Wealth: Mining the Personal Archive of Allen Ginsberg” for

“Ginsberg was our angel. Look beneath your shopping cart—poetry is everywhere if you are so attuned. Ginsberg, like Whitman, is still underneath our boot soles. He left his corporeal existence in 1997, at age 70, but he left behind filing cabinets the size of Texas, and, in his new book, ‘Material Wealth,’ Pat Thomas unloads the Ginsberg archive and leaves no stone unturned.”

Material Wealth is on sale now! Make sure to grab your copy at your local bookstore.

One of our better books in terms of unbridled imagination on part of the designers, Andy Outis and at the very start Francesca Richer, and the amazing selection from the archive from Pat Thomas. The previously unpublished MS in facsimile in a pocket in the back is something we’ve not done before, Andy is a genius!

“An expansive book, it's worth owning for anyone interested in San Francisco history, especially those interested in the significant contributions of the Beat Generation and how it paved the way for the hippy movement in the 1960s.”

Mark William Norby at Bay Area Reporter on counterculture historian Pat Thomas’s new book MATERIAL WEALTH, out now from powerHouse Books.

Pat Thomas will be at City Lights, in conversation with Peter Hale, executor at The Allen Ginsberg Estate, to celebrate this book's release on Wed, Jan 24 at 7pm PT.

We are SUPER thrilled to have “Castro to Christopher: Gay Streets of America 1979–1986” featured in AnOther Magazine! Written by Nicholas Blair with an intro by Jim Farber, this new release documents the “gay paradises” in San Francisco and New York in the 80s.

Head to AnOther to read this inspiring article and interview!

“In the late 70s, gay life began to spill out onto the streets of San Francisco’s Castro District, rapidly eclipsing the hippies as the most visible counter-culture movement of the day. People came to see and be seen, tease, cruise, and congregate in public as a community. “It was this outburst of pent-up celebration,” says Nicholas Blair, who was living in a free-love arts commune across town at the time. “It felt like the door of tolerance was opening and people were leaning in, hard, to live as their true selves.”
