This January LaMonte McLemore’s photography was featured on the cover of D.C. based magazine The Georgetowner . Writer Tom Turco interviewed Chris Murray of Govinda Gallery to discuss McLemore’s life and their process of starting a book together.

‘Discussing McLemore’s legacy, Murray provided a captivating deep dive into the story behind the book. It was a fascinating glimpse into a transformative era in U.S. history, when the civil rights movement was making headway on multiple fronts and Eurocentric concepts of beauty were being upended’, writes Tom Turco.

We continue to send our condolences to the friends and family of LaMonte at this time. ❤️

In Memoriam
LaMonte McLemore: September 17, 1935-February 3, 2026

powerHouse Books and Govinda Gallery are saddened to announce the passing of photographer and musician LaMonte McLemore who passed away peacefully with his wife Mieko by his side at his home in Henderson, Nevada. He had been unwell for some time. He was 90 years old.

LaMonte McLemore was a vocalist and one of the founding members of the pop-soul group The 5th Dimension-boasting 20 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 (with “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” reaching number one), nine Grammy nominations, and six wins, including two Records of the Year-known for their versatile sound and diverse appeal that transcended race, age, and nationality.

Arguably just as impactful as his career in music, if not more so, was his career as a photographer cementing Black women and models in American media and cultural history. McLemore freelanced for JET magazine for more than four decades, principally shooting for its “Beauty of the Week” feature, which encapsulated Black joy, style, and beauty.

LaMonte McLemore’s work with The 5th Dimension and JET magazine left a significant impact on popular culture, one that can still be seen today.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to LaMonte’s lovely and devoted wife Mieko and the rest of his family and close friends.

In the Spring of 2024 powerHouse Books had the honor of publishing a selection of McLemore’s JET Beauties of the Week, with essays by Sylvia Flanagan, Jayne Kennedy , and Mickalene Thomas . I am crushed to hear of ’s Jean-Jacques Naudet’s passing, its founder and publisher. There is no more influential voice in photography today than his beloved L’Oeil.

Jean-Jacques was instrumental in supporting me when I launched powerHouse Books in 1995; he was taken with the brazenness of the content and especially of the design and approach to photography books I was taking when launching my photo book publishing company (I had just published Sylvia Plachy’s Red Light: Inside the S*x Industry; Love is Blind with Marvin Heiferman and Carole Kismaric; and Larry Fink’s Boxing), and he had to meet me and learn more, perched up on the back of his chair with his feet on the seat and elbows on knees, chin cupped by his thumbs and forefingers, double Thinker-style, contemplating silently for what seemed like forever before exhaling, as if an afterthought, ‘Bon…c’est incroyable…’ and asking to get press materials for American Photo…

He was the godhead of photography then, masterminding American Photo and then much later L’Oeil de la Photographie. To meet with him in those days meant you had arrived officially at the table where tastemakers, and what we now know to be content makers and influencers, met and mingled and discovered and understood.

The world has lost an ebullient light, a force for uncontainable joy and enthusiasm for photography, and a genuinely magnificent person. His soul and spirit will be sorely missed. — Daniel Power

Today we’re sharing a few photos from our 2023 publication Castro to Christopher: Gay Streets of America 1979-1986, photographs by Nicholas Blair with an introduction by Jim Farber.

Castro to Christopher was recently featured in Minneapolis’ Lavender Magazine curated reading list, selected by editor emeritus Ethan Boatner.

Thank you so much Ethan for including our publication in your list and for your thoughtful review of the work. Photographer Nicholas Blair’s revealing, evocative, and celebratory photos are a window into the outburst of pent-up celebration and (occasionally) riotous ebullience of theretofore closeted persons who had suddenly felt the door of tolerance opening a crack, and who were now leaning in, hard, to live life openly as their true and genuine selves in the 1970s and 1980s.

Head to the link in our bio to purchase your copy today of this beautifully tender and celebratory photo book of the lost world of “gay paradises” in San Francisco and New York.

❤️ Thank you to Garden & Gun for this wonderfully unique feature on our 2005 copublication with Edwynn Houk Gallery Disfarmer: The Vintage Prints, photographs by Mike Disfarmer.

Voted Best Photography Book of 2005 by The New York Times Book Review , Mike Disfarmer owned and operated a private portrait studio for most of his adult life. Usually using antiquated glass-plate negatives, Disfarmer captured the likeness of the residents of Herber Springs, Arkansas and the surrounding farmland during a pivotal moment in American history.

As Kathryn Hurni, photo editor of Garden & Gun, said in their review, “these studio portraits, made in rural Arkansas nearly eighty years ago, still feel startlingly alive and show that simplicity can hold profound psychological depth.”

While this title is sold out via the powerHouse shop, second hand copies exist online and through independent book sellers 📚

Thank you to Garden & Gun for allowing us to reflect on several decades worth of powerHouse publishing and for adding us to your favorite books of 2025 list!

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year from the powerHouse Books Team ✨
