Excited to have 3 winter online classes start next week!
Very much looking forward to welcoming back many talented members of the FotoFilmic family to our virtual classroom for yet another thrilling season of mentoring, learning, sharing and supporting emerging and mid-careers contemporary photographers and their practices around the world!
There actually still are a few partial scholarships available for a number of programs, notably to take part in acclaimed documentary photographer Brian Finke's long form photographic storytelling class. The course unfolds a period of 12 weeks and is ideally suited to photographers looking to start new projects, or re-boot the narratives of existing ones. ‘Dads’ a book by Flemish photographer Bart Heynen portrays gay fatherhood in America.
Bart Heynen currently lives in Brooklyn and traveled across the U.S. to photograph gay dads with their kids. Why did he make these portraits? In an interview Heynen said he felt a bit lonely as a gay dad since all the other families he knew were straight families. He also thinks it’s important for his kids to see other families with gay dads. Heynen hopes that the book will dispel some of the hurtful stereotypes that still linger around gay fatherhood.
‘Dads’ seeks to show the full spectrum of fatherhood in the U.S. : married couples, single fathers, widowers, … The book also includes several surrogates, who helped some of these gay dads’ dream come true.

Publica powerHouse Books.

Donna Ferrato 'Holy' is a powerful voice for women's issues. The book calls for an understanding of the “denigration, abuse and contempt“ suffered by women at all levels of our societies.

Happy Friday! I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. So many of us celebrated the holiday in a much different way than we are used to. One of the things that I am grateful for this year is that I have been able to continue my work as both an occupational therapist and my work leading my social skills group at The Meeting House. My kids have taught me so much about being resilient and flexible during these crazy times. These are tricky things to teach young children but one thing I have found over the years is that kids tend to have a hard time talking feelings, emotions and other tricky social emotional topics but conversations are more easily had when they can talk about these tricky topics in reference to a character in a book.
Given the amount of crazy things parents and kids have had to deal with in 2020, I decided to focus my SEL Book Guide on a few very important topics: kindness, acceptance, diversity, flexibility, emotions and feelings. I have chosen, with the help of other therapists and parents, some of the most beautiful and thoughtful children's books. SO many of these should be mandatory reading for all humans in order to create a more kind and empathetic world.
I would LOVE to hear from any and all of you about your favorite children's books. I know that there are so many other great books out there and I know that I am not alone in wanting to add to my collection. I will happily add any book recommended to this post.
A little PSA, please support your local bookstores when possible. I am tagging my local bookstores on this post and will again happily tag any that any that you guys suggest.
