If you're awake early on September 8, look toward the eastern sky.

An extremely thin waning crescent Moon will appear remarkably close to brilliant Jupiter. ✨

And this one should be easy to identify.

Jupiter will shine as an intensely bright, star-like point beside the delicate crescent Moon, creating one of the prettiest pre-dawn pairings of September.

Look higher and you may also find reddish Mars.

On August 12, 2026, a NASA research aircraft climbed to about 50,000 feet and flew into the path of a total solar eclipse.

Then daylight disappeared.

As the Moon completely covered the bright face of the Sun, its delicate corona emerged against a dramatically darkened sky.

But look toward the horizon and something extraordinary happens:

Mars can turn that familiar picture upside down.

Near the setting Sun, fine dust suspended in the thin Martian atmosphere can create a cool bluish glow, while the surrounding sky keeps its dusty tan and reddish tones.

And imagine watching it beneath another moon.

Mars has two: Phobos and Deimos.

πŸŒ‘ Phobos is the larger and closer of the two, an irregular little world racing around Mars far faster than our Moon circles Earth.

In fact, Phobos orbits Mars roughly three times during a single Martian day.

The Moon is waning toward New Moon on September 11, and that means darker observing conditions are approaching.

The Milky Way doesn't become brighter because the Moon disappears.

But there's something important to know before setting your alarm:

This is NOT a meteor storm.

The September Lyncids are a minor, relatively weak shower. Although some references list only a few meteors per hour under ideal conditions, actual visual rates can be even lower.

So why watch?

While everyone remembers the Perseids and Geminids, a much quieter meteor shower is active in the September sky.

It's called the September Lyncids.

The shower's radiant lies in the northern constellation Lynx, and activity reaches its maximum around September 12–13.

But here's the important part:

Don't expect a meteor storm.

The September Lyncids are a minor and relatively weak shower. Some references list only a few meteors per hour under ideal conditions, while actual visual rates can be even lower.

That makes this one less about counting dozens of shooting stars, and more about patiently watching a dark sky.
