Moby loves Allowed to Grow Old and you will too!

There’s nothing quite like a relationship with an aged pet—a dog or cat who has been at our side for years, forming an ineffable bond. Pampered pets, however, are a rarity among animals who have been domesticated. Farm animals, for example, are usually slaughtered before their first b...

Creating Your Own Healing Narrative: A Program for Practitioners with Donna Jackson Nakazawa
October 16th, 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., Hyatt Regency San Francisco, ACEs2018 Conference

Often, the health practitioners, physicians, teachers and social workers who focus their heartfelt energy and compassion on helping children with ACEs, neglect to adequately support their own self-care or feel compassion for their own ACE histories and past suffering. And yet we know that caregivers who have suffered adverse childhood experiences and who foster their own inner healing and resiliency in order to achieve post-traumatic growth — those who learn to “self-parent” and “manage their own stuff” — are better able to handle, and enjoy, their demanding professional roles as practitioners helping others. Without such attention to self-healing, practitioners may find themselves more likely to over-react or under-react in emotionally stressful and demanding situations. This workshop — led by Donna Jackson Nakazawa, author of Childhood Disrupted: How Your Biography Becomes Your Biology and How You Can Heal — will, through questionnaires, short writing prompts, and writing-to-heal exercises, help participants to discover how their own ACE histories may be affecting their work and well-being, to write their own new healing narratives, and to uncover their own unique paths to resiliency in the present.

Lockhart, E. (Author)
Sep 2017. 272 p. Delacorte, hardcover, $18.99. (9780385744775). Delacorte, library edition, $21.99.
(9780375991844). Delacorte, e-book, $18.99. (9780385391382).
It’s difficult to describe Lockhart’s latest psychological thriller without dipping into spoilers, but here are the pertinent details: Jule, a peripatetic, athletic, superhero-obsessed teen girl is best friends with rich, restless Imogen, who recently committed suicide. When readers meet Jule, she’s lounging at a tony resort in Mexico, eating junk food and enjoying the sun. It’s clear she’s on the run, though from whom or why isn’t clear, and Lockhart strings readers along with a clever narrative gambit. In a clipped, detached tone, Lockhart tells Jule’s story in reverse, and with each step backward, she peels away juicy layers of intrigue. As the relationship between Jule and Imogen comes into focus, Lockhart explores themes of jealousy, loyalty, privilege, and origins. Imogen, who was adopted, is fixated on the idea of feeling a strong sense of identity, while Jule constantly relies on an unlikely story to explain her childhood. But can they really know each other at all? It’s a captivating, suspenseful story made all the more bewitching by Lockhart’s twisty narrative, and she constantly keeps readers guessing with unpredictable turns and eye-opening reveals. This quietly unsettling, cinematic novel is deliciously suspenseful, and while it’s slim, it packs a real punch. Teens who love to hate antiheroes will be enraptured.

The ever amazing E. Lockhart!

a spectacular book that every college student, parent of college student and college student to be should read. Hopeful about the importance of a broad minded education.

Unlike career-focused education, liberal education prepares graduates for anything and everything—and nervo...
