🚨 Havoc outside Delaney Hall ICE Prison in Newark, New Jersey, where state and local police officers violently shoved protestors to the ground, punched them while they were down, and refused to identify themselves during the height of a massive hunger and labor strike over uninhabitable living conditions within the private, for-profit prison.

Status Coup videojournalist Jon Farina was one of several members of the press who were shoved by law enforcement and restricted from covering the incident. When he tried to follow up with officers, several of them restricted his access to the scene and refused to identify themselves by name and badge number.

On Day 16 of the hunger and labor strike outside Delaney Hall ICE detention center, Status Coup’s Jordan Chariton confronted police over restrictions on protective gear for both protesters and journalists.

“You can’t tell journalists they can’t protect themselves,” Jordan said, questioning officers about who ordered the restrictions and what legal authority they were relying on.

The exchange came after days of escalating confrontations outside Delaney Hall, where protesters, journalists, and legal observers have faced pepper balls, chemical irritants, arrests, vehicle incidents, and repeated police crowd-control operations.

As Jordan pressed for answers, office couldn’t identify who was responsible for the order, with one officer suggesting it came from “the city.”

A tear gas canister lands in the street.

Moments later, protesters run toward it.

One kicks it away. Police kick it back.

Then comes a traffic cone. Then water.

As smoke continues to rise outside Delaney Hall, protesters work together to contain the canister while chants of “Whose streets? Our streets!” echo through Newark.

In the days since New Jersey State Police first arrived outside Delaney Hall, protesters have faced tear gas, pepper spray, mounted police, metal barricades, concrete barriers, and designated free speech zones.

Yet the crowds keep returning.
