Education has always been central to Palestinian life. It’s a tool to build society and to resist occupation. Israel understands this, which is why it targets schools, universities, students, and scholars. Support Youssef and his family in education (link in bio).

This post was made in partnership with the Institute for Palestine Studies (Institute for Palestine Studies) for their campaign. A historic, independent research non-profit, IPS is a highly reliable source of scholarship on Palestine, and we used its resources to bring you this post 📚

co-founder Mohamedsalem speaks to our podcast host about the ideology driving Morocco’s irredentist claims over the Western Sahara and beyond, comparing it to the well-known Greater Israel project.

Saharawi Voice joins us in our latest podcast episode Palestine, and Africa’s Last Colony to explore how the Palestinian and Western Saharan anti-colonial movements are inherently related. In this episode, the substantive ties between Israel and Morocco are exposed, as well as the uncanny similarities both Palestinians and Sahrawis face living under occupation and in exile.

Is this Palestine’s most similar struggle?

Tucked away on the Western coast of Africa lies ‘Africa’s Last Colony’, the Western Sahara. Under Moroccan occupation since 1975, the indigenous Sahrawi population has endured displacement, exile, and complete political suppression of their identity.

As the Moroccan monarchy consistently deepens ties with Israel, the Palestinian and Sahrawi struggles become increasingly harder to separate.

Who are the Sahrawis? What is their struggle? How do Palestinians and Sahrawis relate?

Sliman Mansour was Palestine’s painter, weaving its memory, scars, and dignity into his paintings. It is difficult to convey to outsiders what he was to Palestinians — his works dominate the walls of Palestinian grandparents, he contributed to the creation of the watermelon as a Palestinian icon of defiance, and his work reverberates across decades and generations as the Nakba mercilessly marches on.

Swipe to see a few of his works (explanation of each in caption).

Sliman Mansour was born in Birzeit, a town north of Ramallah, in 1947 — one year before the Nakba. He would spend the rest of his life with the occupation as his subject, giving visual form to Palestinian dispossession and steadfastness (sumud). His art was driven by an unshakeable connection to the land.

Mansour studied fine arts at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in occupied Jerusalem. At the age of 26, he painted “Jamal al-Mahamel” or the Camel of Hardship: an old porter carrying all of Jerusalem on his back. It became one of the most reproduced images of the Palestinian reality, printed thousands of times and hung in homes from the West Bank, to Gaza, to the refugee camps of the diaspora.

Because occupied Palestine had almost no permanent galleries until the mid-1990s, Mansour’s images were disseminated as posters and postcards. The PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) distributed Jamal al-Mahamel as a poster in 1975.

When the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) killed Lina al-Nabulsi, a schoolgirl from Nablus in 1976, they forbade anyone from photographing her. Her martyrdom inspired a poem by Hassan Daher, which prompted Mansour to realize her story on canvas, and it became one of his most iconic paintings. His work held the faces and names of martyrs that the occupying forces had meant to disappear.

Throughout the 1980s, Israeli forces would come to Mansour’s exhibitions and routinely confiscate paintings that they deemed constituted “incitement. “I would watch what they would take, and it was silly things, like a peasant woman wearing nice embroidery and working in the field,” he said in an interview with Middle East Eye in 2023.

In 1988, Mansour painted a series on the dest

Everything you need to know about Lebanon’s optional surrender agreement to Israel.

The histories of Troy, Lebanon, and Palestine are warning Lebanese elites. Will they listen before it’s too late?

*See our recent “Is Israel Colonizing Lebanon?” post for details.
**See our [Oslo Accords post/Two-State Solution series/Oslo Accords article on our website] for details.

*It’s illegal as the occupation lacks a valid self-defense basis, as it was in response to armed resistance to liberate Lebanese territory occupied since 1967.

**The US announced the first planned pilot zones in the villages of Froun, Srifa, and Zawtar Al-Gharbiya. Zawtar Al-Gharbiya, or Western Zawtar, is perhaps the most tactically sensitive of the three. It sits directly on the bluffs overlooking the Litani River valley, acting as a gateway between the northern hinterland and the southern border zone.
Notably, Zawtar Al-Gharbiya is the only one of the three villages currently occupied by Israeli forces, making it the primary site for the initial phased withdrawal of the Israeli military.
In pilot zones, the Lebanese army deploys, then third-party entities confirm the withdrawal or disarmament of resistance groups, then the Israeli military is apparently meant to withdraw from there.

The agreement commits to a “cessation of all hostile or adverse actions in international political or legal fora.” Lebanon’s Prime Minister insisted this only means temporarily halting the right to resort to international courts during negotiations, not permanently. But critics, including Human Rights Watch, say it aims to prevent Lebanese victims from seeking justice before international forums, and its broad and ambiguous wording can allow for such interpretations. The agreement also doesn’t stop Israel from initiatives in international forums against H3xb specifically.

Israel wants to keep Lebanese lands specifically, with or without H3 zb, in a step towards the 100-year Zionist dream of colonizing South Lebanon.

For more on Zionism’s long-running fantasy of annexing Lebanese lands, check out our recent “Is Israel Colonizing South Lebanon?” post.

With $30,000,000, AIPAC is the biggest spender in Michigan’s M1 Senate Democrat primary — its most expensive ever. Why? To take down progressive challenger Abdul El-Sayed.

The primary between El-Sayed and Haley Stevens isn’t just about Michigan. It’s a battle for control over the Democrat party’s future and whom it serves.
