There's a difference between a grandchild who visits because they were told to, and one who visits because they wanted to.
You spend years not knowing which one you're raising.
You show up to every school play.
You keep a drawer full of snacks just for them.
You sit through cartoons you don't understand and games you don't know the rules to.
You do it because that's what grandparents do.
But somewhere in the back of your mind, you wonder if any of it will matter once they're grown and their own life takes over.
Then one ordinary afternoon, your phone buzzes.
"Free this weekend? Thinking of coming by."
Not because there's a birthday.
Not because someone reminded them.
Just because they wanted to.
They walk in, kick off their shoes like they still live there, and sit down at the same table they used to do homework on.
Maybe they talk about work.
Maybe they ask for your advice on something they probably already decided.
Maybe you just sit together in comfortable silence, the kind only family can share.
And somewhere in that ordinary afternoon, it hits you.
All those years of showing up for them.
All those small moments you weren't sure they'd remember.
They remembered.
And now they're the one showing up.
Because a grandchild who visits out of love, not obligation, isn't just stopping by.
They're proving that everything you gave them years ago is still living inside them today.
That's not a small thing. That's the whole point.
