This U.S. aircraft carrier looked impossible to save — but it refused to sink.
On March 19, 1945, USS Franklin (CV-13) was hit by Japanese bombs near the Japanese mainland. Fires tore through the ship, aircraft exploded on deck, and hundreds of sailors were lost or wounded.
But somehow, Franklin stayed afloat.
Her crew fought through smoke, fire, and chaos to keep the carrier alive. The ship was so badly damaged that many believed she was finished — yet she survived the war and became known as one of the toughest carriers in U.S. Navy history.
A burning carrier. A devastated crew. A ship that refused to die. ⚓🇺🇸
