On October 6, 1917, Congress passed the Deficiency Appropriations Act to build three plants capable of producing 500,000 pounds of gunpowder per day for use in fighting Germany in World War I.

The village that would become Nitro, West Virginia, was chosen by War Department engineers for its protection from coastal attacks and access to rail and river transportation.

Rapidly transitioning from farmland to industrial hub, Nitro spent 1918 hurtling from one century into the next. Two Centuries, One Year imagines this transformation through the eyes of 12-year-old Ana Ar**no.

Real photos included in the book tell this story in tandem with author Ann Calwell’s words. From railroad tracks and train cars to automobiles and gunpowder factories, swipe along to watch Nitro go from farm town to boomtown.

As an aspiring war correspondent, 12-year-old Ana Ar**no wants President Woodrow Wilson to stay updated on what’s happening in her hometown of Nitro, West Virginia. She begins writing letters to him filled with vivid observations, photographs, and a promise on behalf of Nitro that they will do their part in helping the country through WWI.

These letters continue through author Ann Calwell’s new historical fiction novel, Two Centuries, One Year, as the main character, Ana, watches her hometown evolve. Calwell even cites a real-life letter from a young Mildred White to Wilson as the main inspiration for writing the novel.

On November 11th, 1918, the Allies and Germany signed an armistice that marked the end of World War I after over four years of fighting.

Now on the 107th anniversary, Hart and Harvest Press is pleased to announce the release of our new historical fiction novel Two Centuries, One Year by Ann Calwell.

The first-person narrative, told through the eyes of 12-year-old Ana Ar**no, delves into the origins of small-town Nitro, West Virginia, whose existence and namesake come from a result of WWI and the production of gunpowder to fuel the war.

Inspired by her familial ties to Nitro as a West Virginia native, Calwell captures Nitro “at the turn of the century,” and aims to use storytelling to educate readers on Nitro’s rich history as it transitioned from farmland to industrial hub.
