“Laura… the police report says you were the last person who spoke to me before I disappeared.”
Daniel said it calmly, but the effect on Laura was immediate.
The color drained from her face as the memory returned to her mind, and the look in her eyes told Mark something was very wrong. For a moment the only sound in the room was the rain beating against the windows.
Mark turned toward her slowly. “You never told me that,” he said, his voice tightening as he studied her expression. Laura tried to steady her breathing, but the truth was already written across her face.
HOW IT STARTED…
Five years earlier, Laura had been preparing dinner when her phone rang unexpectedly. When she saw Daniel’s name on the screen, she answered immediately, because he rarely called in the evening unless something was wrong.
The moment he spoke she sensed the tension in his voice. Daniel told her he had discovered something earlier that day that didn’t make sense and needed to meet Mark before coming home. When Laura pressed him to explain, he refused to talk about it over the phone and said they would all discuss it later that night.
Before hanging up, Daniel said something that stayed with her long after the call ended. He told her that if anything strange happened that night she should remember that he trusted both of them. At the time Laura had not understood what he meant.
It was the last time she heard Daniel’s voice.
Back in the living room, Mark stared at her carefully. “Why didn’t you tell the police about that call?” he asked, the irritation in his voice barely hidden.
Laura hesitated before answering. Everything that followed Daniel’s disappearance had happened so quickly that the days blurred together in her mind. The police questions, the search teams, and the discovery of the body had pushed every other detail aside.
Daniel shook his head slowly. He watched her the way someone studies a puzzle that finally begins to make sense.
“You didn’t forget,” he said quietly. “You chose not to tell them.”
Laura looked at him with growing unease. “Why would I hide that?”
Daniel’s eyes moved briefly toward Mark before returning to her. “That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to understand.”
Mark suddenly lost patience. He stepped forward and slammed his hand against the table. “Enough of this,” he said sharply. “You disappear for five years and come back making accusations without proof.”
Daniel did not react to the anger. Instead he reached into his coat pocket and placed his phone on the table.
“For five years,” he said slowly, “I’ve been trying to understand what really happened that night.”
He pressed play.
A voice filled the room.
Laura gasped the moment she heard it, because it was her own voice from the night Daniel disappeared. In the recording she was telling Daniel that he was worrying too much and that Mark believed he was imagining things.
Mark’s expression tightened immediately.
Daniel stopped the recording and looked at them. “You see the problem now,” he said quietly.
Laura stared at the phone in disbelief. “I don’t remember saying that.”
Mark quickly stepped forward, his voice sharp. “That proves nothing. People forget conversations all the time.”
Daniel watched him carefully before pressing play again.
Another voice filled the room.
This time it was Mark’s voice.
In the recording Mark was telling Daniel to stop overthinking whatever he had discovered and to come over so they could talk face to face. Laura slowly turned toward her husband as the realization began to settle in.
“Mark… why were you on that call?” she asked.
Daniel answered before Mark could speak.
“He joined the call after Laura hung up.”
Laura’s heart began to pound harder.
Daniel turned the phone toward them so they could see the screen. The timestamp showed that the call had ended at 9:18 p.m.
Laura felt the room spin slightly, because she suddenly remembered the timeline the police had used during the investigation.
According to Mark’s statement, Daniel did not arrive at his house until 10 p.m.
The silence that followed was heavy and uncomfortable.
Mark’s voice came out lower now. “Where did you get that recording?”
Daniel studied him calmly. “The better question,” he replied, “is why you told the police you didn’t speak to me again after that call.”
Laura looked between the two men as her mind raced through the details she had never questioned before. The entire investigation had relied on the timeline Mark gave the police that night.
Daniel’s voice softened, but the tension behind it was unmistakable.
“For five years everyone believed the wrong story,” he said.
Laura’s stomach tightened as the realization slowly formed in her mind. If Daniel and Mark had spoken at 9:18 p.m., then the timeline Mark gave the police could not be true.
But before she could speak, Daniel said something that made both of them freeze.
“The strange thing,” he continued quietly, “is that the recording didn’t come from my phone.”
Laura stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel leaned back slightly and looked at Mark.
“The recording came from another phone that was connected to the call that night.”
Laura’s breath caught in her throat.
“Someone else was listening,” Daniel said.
The room went completely silent.
Because if someone else had been secretly listening to that call five years ago…
then there had been a third person involved the night Daniel disappeared.
To Be Continued…
If someone else was secretly listening to that call that night…
Who was it?
And why did they record the conversation?
More importantly…
Did Laura or Mark already know about that third person?
Tell me honestly.
Right now, who do you trust the least?
Laura
Mark or Daniel?
