The Remarkable Story of Dr. James Barry
Dr. James Barry was a brilliant surgeon in the British Army during the 19th century. Barry completed medical training at a young age and went on to serve across the British Empire, becoming known for improving hospital conditions and medical care for soldiers and the poor. In Cape Town, Barry performed one of the earliest recorded successful cesarean sections in which both mother and child survived.
After Barry’s death in 1865, it was discovered that the doctor had been born as Margaret Ann Bulkley and had lived life disguised as a man in order to pursue a medical career at a time when women were not allowed to study medicine or serve in the army. Barry’s life remains one of the most fascinating and courageous stories in the history of medicine.
