In 1939, more than 20,000 Americans packed Madison Square Garden for a pro-Nazi rally covered in American flags and patriotic slogans.
Authoritarian movements use nationalism, fear, media, and loyalty to normalize extremism which is why historians pay attention when those patterns start appearing again.

As the US ramps up the pressure on Cuba with the arrest of the former president, the 94 year old Raúl Castro, it seems timely to re-run this reel from March this year.

Nobody was talking about Cuba then, despite the catastrophic US blockade and nobody is really talking about it much now, despite the arrest looking very much like a pretext for a Venezuela-style strike.

Castro has been charged in respect of the fatal downing of two planes 30 years ago. Not something new. Not because there is new evidence.

Cuba's ambassador to the US called it 'a circus they are now mounting as one more action to justify military aggression against Cuba.

Time will tell if that assessment is correct.

It was the Supreme Court that opened the door to the out-of-control spending on elections by corporations and the super-rich. And Trump has gone on to make the most of that decision. No surprise there.
