"I found a second toothbrush in my husband’s travel bag, but we hadn’t gone on a trip together in months."
I thought our marriage was rock solid. Mark is a project manager, and his job requires him to travel for conferences every few weeks. I’ve always been the supportive wife, packing his bags, ironing his shirts, and making sure he has everything he needs. It was part of our routine.
Last Thursday, Mark came back from a "three-day conference" in Chicago. He was exhausted, kissed me on the forehead, and went straight to bed. The next morning, while I was unpacking his suitcase to put his laundry in the wash, I noticed the side pocket—the one he usually uses for his toiletries—was bulging slightly.
I reached in to pull out his travel kit, and that’s when I saw it. Tucked neatly into the side, right next to his razor, was a brand-new, pink travel-sized toothbrush. I froze. I use an electric toothbrush, and I haven’t traveled with him since our anniversary last year. We don't even have guests over, so there was no reason for a spare to be floating around our house, let alone packed in his specific bag.
My heart started racing, but I played it cool. I walked into the bedroom and casually asked, "Hey, did you pick up a new toothbrush at the hotel?"
He didn't even look up from his phone. "No, why?"
"There’s a pink one in your bag," I said, my voice shaking just a little.
The silence that followed was deafening. He finally looked up, his face turning pale before he scrambled for an excuse about "grab bags at the conference" or "maybe a mix-up at security." But I saw the way he gripped the edge of the bed. He knew he’d been caught, and for the first time in ten years, I realized I didn't know the man sitting across from me.
