The right brown horn and brain case of Jeannie the TRICERATOPS skull. These parts of the skull were buried next to the left brow horn, yet separate from the squamosals(frill) and mandible(jaw). The deposition Al engines indicates that the skull was fossilized, and then some 500k-1M years later, eroded and scattered across 2.75m (9ft) long area by a river.

Some of the fossils of this skull exhibit water ware and erosion, similar to how smooth-polished stones in a river look. For instance, the right mandible coronoid process is smoothened and eroded, with a rounded shape. Whereas the coronoid process of the left mandible was deposited under a squamosal, and not eroded by the river. More analysis of the site will paint a complete lithological and depositional picture.

This is a continuation of my fossil preparation series on triceratops skull known as “Jeannie.” This is the lateral edge of the right squamosal bone, which means it’s the outer edge of the left side of the frill. The ironstone matrix covers a lot of this skull, making this prep tedious. Regardless of the technical labor involved, the end produce never ceases to fulfill the mind the and soul.

Meet Jules, the baenid turtle from the Hell Creek Formation! This specimen was discovered by my friends .payton & @67.million.mac and me while prospecting last summer. @67.million.mac spotted the eroding shell and we excavated it. Later on this random guy ventured out to the badlands (my cousin) and helped me plaster and extract this royale with 🧀.

& also helped partially excavate the specimen.

I plan on having Jules & Vincent, the other turtle found 1/4 Mile away, find a home at a museum that is a public repository, so that I can publish on it in some capacity. Vincent was discovered by

Palaeosyops from the Bridger Formation, 50-46 MYA! This site was discovered by , and he and I excavated the remains of this ancient perissodactyl. This animal belongs to the same order as tapirs, rhinos, and horses, the odd-toed ungulates. This mandible was found with both halves articulated, so the site could have more skull material. We shall see in the 2025 field season! Until then, stay tuned for the fossil prep during this winter.

The left brow horn of the triceratops skull “Jeannie.” This is a continuation of my prep series on the skull. This is just one of the two complete brow horns. As I remove specimens from the jackets, I’m starting to get a more concise bone map which I will show in the near future!

The first piece of Jeannie’s frill is finished! I believe this is medial edge of the left squamosal bone. Which means the inner edge of the big flat bone that makes up the left side of the frill. I have a complete right squamosal bone, but the left side is disarticulated and piled in to pieces such as this. Stay tuned to see what else is in the skull block of Jeannie!
