AITA for exposing a stranger’s cheating right before his wedding?
I (27M) found a phone on the train last night. It was just sitting there, no one around, so I picked it up to return it later.
Then it started buzzing.
A message popped up saying:
“Did you tell her yet? She deserves to know.”
I know I shouldn’t have looked, but there was no password. I opened it… and I wish I didn’t.
The messages were with someone saved as “Mark,” and it quickly became clear this guy was cheating. Not just once—this had been going on for months. Photos, hotel bookings, everything.
Then another message came in:
“She’s planning the wedding. You can’t keep lying.”
That’s when it got worse.
I checked his contacts and saw “❤️ My Wife ❤️”. I also found a note about a 25,000€ wedding budget—apparently SHE was paying for most of it.
So now I’m standing there realizing this woman is about to marry a guy who’s been living a double life.
Here’s where I might be the as***le.
Instead of just turning the phone in, I went into his messages and found the fiancée’s number. I texted her from his phone:
“You don’t know me, but you need to check his messages with Mark before you get married.”
I didn’t say anything else. Just that.
Then I turned the phone off and handed it in at the station.
This morning, I woke up to a call from an unknown number. I didn’t answer, but I got a text right after:
“You just destroyed my life.”
Now I’m wondering if I crossed a line. It wasn’t my relationship, and I basically blew it up right before their wedding.
But at the same time… she deserved to know, right?
So… AITA?
