About The VOICE
The College VOICE is the award-winning student newspaper of Mercer County Community College in New Jersey. The VOICE is published monthly during each semester with both print and online editions. The VOICE publishes 1,200 copies of each print edition and distributes them at more than 40 locations on two campuses. The online edition averages 200 individual page reads per day and more than 6,200 reads per month. The VOICE is one of the highest rated and most award-winning two-year college newspapers in the nation. After lying dormant for more than four years, The VOICE was revived in the spring of 2008 under the direction of English and Journalism Professor Holly Johnson. Kochis joined the advising team. The co-advisers work in tandem, teaching the basic skills of journalism and journalistic ethics to staffers and students in college journalism classes (not all staffers take Journalism; any Mercer student can write for The VOICE). In the past ten years, The VOICE has won 101 awards from the New Jersey Press Association, five awards from the Associated Collegiate Press association, 2 College Media Association Apple Awards and 38 Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. For 2018-2019 The VOICE also won 3 Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and 17 New Jersey Collegiate Press Association awards. In addition, Dr. Kochis received the College Media Association’s Honor Roll Adviser award for his work. The VOICE has an Editorial Board currently made up of 4 student editors. Although staff sizes fluctuate from semester to semester, each issue showcases the work of ten to twenty student journalists. Recent Editors in Chief of The VOICE have transferred to Stanford University, Columbia University, Hampshire College, Emmerson University, University of Texas at Austin, Montclair University and TCNJ. VOICE alumni have gone on to work for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, NBC News, and numerous other national and local media outlets.
