He Thought Becoming a Doctor Was Out of Reach. Then, at 47, He Did It.
Carl Allamby grew up in East Cleveland, Ohio, in a blue collar community where becoming a doctor seemed like a dream meant for someone else.
As a child, he dreamed of medicine. But the path to medical school felt impossibly distant. So instead of pursuing that dream, Allamby built a life in the automotive industry.
For 25 years, he ran an auto repair business, later expanding into towing and used car sales. He worked, built his businesses, and raised a family. For decades, that was his life.
Then, in his mid 30s, something unexpected happened.
Allamby enrolled at Ursuline College, initially intending to earn a degree in business administration. But one required biology course reignited a dream he had never completely abandoned.
Medicine was still there.
So he made a decision that would change the course of his life. He began taking the prerequisite courses for medical school while continuing to run his businesses and support his family.
It was not a clean break from one career to another. Allamby had to carry his old life while building a new one, balancing college, business responsibilities, and family commitments at the same time.
Eventually, the years of preparation paid off.
Allamby entered Northeast Ohio Medical University and graduated in 2019 at age 47. He then began an emergency medicine residency at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, completing his training in 2022.
That same year, at 51, he began working as an attending emergency medicine physician at Cleveland Clinic's Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.
The contrast is striking. A man who once spent his days repairing cars eventually found himself treating patients in a hospital emergency department.
But Allamby's story is not simply about becoming a doctor late in life.
It is about refusing to accept that a dream has an expiration date.
For years, medicine seemed out of reach. Then, decades after first imagining himself as a doctor, he went back and pursued it while carrying the responsibilities of a business owner, husband, father, and student.
He did not follow the traditional timeline.
He created his own.
And in the end, the dream he once thought was impossible became his reality.
